Merillville, Indiana

Anyone from here? My husband has a job opportunity and we may have to relocate. He's been out of work a few weeks and there are just no opportunities here in MI. I like where we live now, close to shopping and in a subdivision. I'm not one who likes to be out in the middle of nowhere or in an Urban area. I guess I like the "burbs". Oh, and is the economy good in Indiana? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Sally

Hi Sally,
Sorry to hear about the work dilemma. My friend went to law school in Valparaiso, Indiana which was near Merrillville. From what I remember, it was pretty suburban-mall, all the chain restaurants, etc. As for their economy, that I don't know.

We'll definitely have to do another "Ladies Night" before you leave!

Take care,
Klaudia

Hey Klaudia,

Everything is way up in the air right now. I would absolutely HATE to leave, but it's starting to look like we don't have a choice. What a bummer. Hope everything is well with you, and yes, we'll have to hook up soon.

Hey there! I grew up in Gary, and my grandparents just moved out of Merrillville a couple of years ago to be near us in Indy, and we live out here because there are more job opps in Indianapolis. My entire family still lives in the Merrillville/Griffith/Gary area and we get to visit quite a bit.

Honestly, the entire region feels like one big suburb of Chicago. There is a lot to do up there with it being less than an hour from the city and right next to the lake, and the area is really growing. I know that after the 60's the economy took a really big hit (it was a huge industrial area), but they have really been trying to build it back up again. Nobody in my family or any of our friends have ever had trouble finding or keeping a job. The standard of living in IN is a lot cheaper than most places, but every time I visit up there I go into shock because there really is so much more drug use and violence up there than we are used to in Indy (Gary was the murder capital of the country recently). Gary really is the achilles heel of the whole region, but as you get into Hobart/Merrillville/Schererville it's suburbia anywhere.

I really have to get going now; I just skim through here every once in a while and saw your post and had to respond! Please pm me for any info.

I lived most of my life in Indiana. I was from the southern part of Indiana. I love Indiana, it will always be my home. but the economy was the reason we left. If We could get decent paying jobs there, I would go back in a heartbeat.

Hi,
This doesn't pertain to Indiana but close friends of our family just moved 3 weeks ago from Michigan to North Carolina for work. They grew up here but the man had lost his tool & die job a year ago.

I don't know if you've seen the news but Channel 8 in Grand Rapids did research/survey and 300,000 people are expected to leave Michigan this year due to the economy and/or weather!

I just want to wish you the best of luck with your husband's job-hunting!

Patti

Thanks to everyone who responded today. I am a little concerned about Merillville's proximity to Gary. I haven't heard many good things concerning Gary. As far as Michigan is concerned, remember when Granholm promised "In five years your going to be blown away!"? I guess I didn't know she meant blown right out of the state! It's very discouraging.

Hi,

I'm living in South Bend right now, about an hour east of Merillville. I've been shopping in that area, which is pretty suburban. Standard stuff: strip malls, big box stores, etc.
Maybe I'm biased because I moved here from NY, but my advice is: DON'T MOVE TO INDIANA! There is no economy here to speak of. The only reason the SB area even exists is because of Notre Dame. Yes, property values are extremely low so buying a home will be ridiculously inexpensive, but Indiana has notoriously horrible public schools (I'm sure there are exceptions, but for the most part). And the money you save buying a home will be sucked away by the outrageous annual car registration fees you have to pay here. We have a tax here on wheels. Yes, if you have wheels on a vehicle you intend to drive, there is an additional tax you are assessed each year. I could go on and on.
Sorry for the rant, but be warned. I've lived here since 2001 and will FINALLY be moving out of this place in the fall. My husband and I have pretty much hated every minute we've spent here. Maybe we're just huge snobs, I don't know.

Stay away, stay far, far away.

I moved to Indiana (although i am in the south) from Illinois in 2000. My dh is from here and thinks it it heaven on earth (lol). The area I live in is beautiful, but very rural. However, I like the privacy and the safety of letting my kids play outside without fear of something bad happening to them. Dh does have a good paying job and I have never heard of anybody around here having trouble finding a job.

Now, for the shockers.....car registration....in Illinois (back in 2000) was $50. So you can imagine my shock when I received a $300 tag renewal (for 2 vehicles). Everytime you get a new car, the registration goes up. If you keep the car for many years, it goes down every year. Plus, many people complain about the always rising property taxes. I have not been real impressed with the public schools in the area either.

On a good note, you are going to have shockers no matter where you live! Good luck!

I've lived in this area all my life. I grew up in Michigan City and now live in Hammond. Northwest Indiana is great because it's so close to Chicago. Because Merrillville, Shererville, Munster, Hammond, Highland and St. John are so close to the Illinois border, there are many people who live here and work in Illionis (myself and my hubby, my boss and several people I work with). The property taxes in Indiana are lower than Illinois, too.

Merrillville is a thriving business community with a lot of opportunity. If there's already a job opportunity, you've got it made.

Gas right now is about $2.89 a gallon. Milk is about $1.79 for a half gallon. I can pick up a pound of ground beef for about $2.80.

Housing in the area is a little higher than where my mom lives in rural Kansas, but the water bill and phone bill is cheaper! For a nice apartment with 2 bedrooms, you can figure an average of $700 to $1000 a month, depending if you want big, a yard, a garage, a complex... If you rent the top floor of a house, you'll get more for less.

If you're looking to buy, a house in a nice neighborhood can cost anywhere from $90,000 on up. It depends on the neighborhood. I bought my house 7 years ago for $77,000, have 1200 sq. feet and 2 bedrooms. The house is now worth about $92,000 and we're looking to move into a better neighborhood now. Now, of course, we're looking to upgrade and the range we're looking in to get what we want is $150-175K.

Gary is close, but not that close. A lot of what is heard about Gary is hype. Personally, I just don't go to Gary. I drive on the highway around it. I have driven through on occasion and have 2 friends that live there, but I can't say I'm comfortable there. So I just stay away.

Because of the proximity to Gary and Chicago, there is gang activity, but it's usually confined to the poorer neighborhoods that you're not going to venture into. I work in Harvey, Il and it's a very repressed area. We have security guards who will escort us to the parking garage. But that's Harvey, not Merrillville.

Now, the choices for housing are endless. My in-laws just moved to Griffith, which is about 15 minutes from Merrillville. There's Valparaiso, too. A little longer of a drive, but it's a very pristine community. Hard to navigate, but nice. Expensive, too. Griffith is nice and not so hard to navigate. It's close to both Merrillville and Highland (nice shopping).

The thing that is cool about living in this area is that the cities themselves are rather small and they're all side by side. Around my house in Hammond, I can drive for 15 minutes in any direction and be in a different city that has good shopping or food or services. And it's all toll free calling! Whoo hoo!! In 15 minutes, I can be in Lansing, Il, Calumet City, Il, Whiting, Griffith, Hobart, Highland, Schererville, Dyer, St. John or Hessville. Everything I need is in my reach. It's all suburbs, really. You can get to the busy downtown area and 6 blocks away is a park and peace and quiet.

Now, I choose to work in Illinois because the wage for my job is higher there. However, there are ample opportunities for me in my own state should I need it. I'm a Med Lab Tech and there are 10 hospitals within 40 minutes of my house. My husband does not have a college education and he needed a job this year. He spent about 3 months looking before he found a front office management job that does shipping and receiving. But when he found it, he started out at $36K per year but he has experience.

Unskilled labor can expect to earn $8-10 an hour. This is forklift work and whatnot. There's tons of retail and wait staff work and that's pretty typical. You didn't mention what kind of work you might be interested in, so I can't give you examples of those kinds of markets right now.

Some of the larger companies in the area did close. That has left a lot of skilled labor without jobs. A lot of people did move out of the area about 5 years ago and property taxes did go up in Hammond because of the lack of company tax revenue.

If you want, email me at [email protected] and I can get together some housing magazines for you so you can see what the real estate around here looks like. We have apartment guide magazines, too. And a realtor will always be the biggest resourse you have for deciding what type of neighborhood and city will work best for you. I could even send you some sale flyers that I get in the mail. Or feel free to ask me more specific questions about the area and I'll give you my opinions. And heck, if you move here, you'll automatically get a fitness buddy!! Whoo hooo!!

Edited to add: Oh yeah, the other girls are correct!! Licence plates for the cars are outrageous!! Up to $400 for a new high end car! And to get your licence and registration in Indiana if you're from out of state costs your first born child, according to my blood bank supervisor.

hi - I'm a forum lurker, but had to reply to this one! I moved to Merrillville when I was 3, then next door to Crown Point when I was 5 or 6 and lived there until I was 18. My parents worked in Gary and I went to day care there until first grade. My parents moved to Indy when I was 18, so I haven't been back to the area for awhile - not since 2001.

I am not a big fan of the NW indiana area, but that's mostly colored by a childhood desire to get out and see the world (which is why I live in Europe). I just didn't like living in Indiana and moved to California to kick start my career.

The previous poster mentioned it was near Chicago- and that is a BIG plus. The area is nice - there are the dunes and Lake Michigan is great during the summer. Going up to Michigan or into the city is a quick jaunt from here. Standards of living are high but affordable.

If you move there, I would STRONGLY recommend looking at Crown Point, Chesterton, or Lakes of the Four Seasons (an old gated community with several thousand ppl in it). These places have good schools, are characterful and good places to raise kids and have a family. I am not a big fan of Merrillville itself - it's sort of soulless sprawl to me, but it does have good shopping, entertainment (at the Star Plaza) and restaurants.

Hmmm..one thing I really LOVED about growing up in the area were all of the ethnic food festivals and carnivals that were sponsered by the local churches each summer. Merrillville, Hammond, Munster all had a lot of that going on and it was so much fun for the whole community. Just a childhood memory.

Sorry this is rushed, but I am home taking care of a baby atm. If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

Yes, I would look in Crown Point as well....in fact DH and looked at some really pretty houses here when we were visiting his parents last summer. I don't have any bias for or against Merrillville area, my in-laws used to live there, now they live in Hobart....which is pretty much next door. You can't really tell where Merrillville ends and Hobart starts except for the signs. Anyway, it's a really nice area although the car registration/license stuff is pretty messed up.

You hear a bunch of stuff about Gary, but it's pretty much confined to there. I love that you can go around it on the interstate, though. Traffic to and from Chicago is a b#$%h, though because there's always construction/repairs. It's fun to run into Chi-town, though for a day of shopping, sites, museums, and you can't forget the food!!!

DH and I are eventually going to move back there because both our families are up there, mine on the west side of Chicago, his on the east.
