For the ladies who are going thru this can you tell me what has helped you? My last period was in may and i'm not pregnent. I was under alot of stress for 6 months. do you think that might have something to do with it . I exercise 4x;s a week and watch what i eat. Any advice?

Hi Reba!

Yes, I believe stress can play a major role in your hormones doing crazy things. The month my daughter got married, I had TWO periods and woke up two different nights in the same week with night sweats. I actually did not feel stressed at the time, but deep down, maybe I was, because it has not happened since and that was over 3 years ago. I will be 50 this year and everything has been regular since. Since you had a period in May, it has only been maybe 6 weeks??? I'd give it a couple more weeks and see what happens. Have you had any other symptoms? Do you know when your Mom went into Menopause? Here's hoping both you & I breeze right thru the big "M"!!!! :7 Good for you for exercising and eating a good diet.

Why don't you make an appointment with your GYN and find out what is going on. Then you can make some lifestyle changes. Good luck! :)

Do get this checked out. I missed my period for 3 months for medical reasons but it puts you in very high risk for developing osterperous (sorry wrong spelling but basically missing periods is one of the symptoms for developing bone structure problems in later life).

DON'T PANIC I am not saying you have anything to worry about but do find out what and why is happening. I left my problem of heavy periods for years and had to have major surgery so go check it out make your doctor listen to you, even if it is just stress you need to de-stressing strategies.

Hi Reba! I'm now in full blown menopause myself and it ain't easy! I was suffering from a lot of night sweats (waking up 2-3x a night) as well as starting to have hot flashes at work. My doctor put me on a low-dosage estrogen pill (Mircette 28). I'm to stay on this pill for 6 months. I immediately was relieved of all symptoms. Because of sleep deprivation, my workouts were becoming very boring and tiresome to me. I had little energy and I sighed a lot before I would even think about working out. Since I've been on "the pill" I'm no longer suffering from any sleep deprivation and my energy picked up again. I also started the Tank Top Rotation and this has just been great for me. You must, however, eat a VERY CLEAN DIET. Everything we eat and drink now more than ever will go immediately to our abs and hips and thighs and all the amount of exercise will not decrease the bodyfat. My lower pooch has started to come back but I refuse to stress about it. I'm healthy and that's the main thing. Do purchase the book "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Christiane Northrup. The book is a real eye opener and explains everything. She's a believer in holistic medicine; no HRT. I think she's wonderful. Best of luck to you at this very trying time in our lives but we'll persevere and get through it. Talk to your doctor frequently as I do and make sure you have a woman OB/GYN. Good luck! Kathy

Agreeing with KathyH

Reba, KathyH is right on the money here! (Kathy, I, too, was on Mircette for a few months -- I was switched then to Yasmin which is working better for me, but I hope I won't need to take it for long.) Diet is extraordinarily important and the Fat Fairy will send everything extra straight to the places you just don't want to see it! Eat clean, see your doctor for a checkup and try to get some rest and maybe a little meditation or yoga. Take care!

I'm so glad that you asked the question. I've been under a great deal of stress lately and I've been getting more frequent periods. The more stress, the more frequent. First every three weeks and the last three weeks have been unbarable, so I'm now to every other week.

I must go see the doctor, I know ... but I HATE DOCTORS! I've know for a bit that I'm starting to go into this and I'm really sad about it.

You know, for the longest time ... I've complained and complained about the monthly friend, but now that I'm on that doorstep, I really don't want it go away.

Well, I want the messy annoying things to go away, but I just don't want to get old!
Anyway, I am 45 and so far, so good. I plan to deal with everything without doctors and their heavy-handed techniques. After all, it's not a disease, it's just a phase of aging.
I exercise (duh), eat clean and mostly vegan, take ground flax seed and extra minerals and so far I have no symptoms and am not taking any herbs or anything. As symptoms develop, if they do, I will make modifications. I've heard black cohosh and chaste berry are good for hot flashes. And 400 or even 800 IU of Vitamin E.

It needs to be managed--but I agree with several posts. Read up and decide how YOU are going to manage it--then get informed advice from a doctor, if you need to. (Doctors of any kind are very Notoriously BAD on this subject and they vary greatly in wisdom and quality.) Decide for yourself--and Get Information. THEN--go see. If you don't like what you hear--go elsewhere. My advice: soy food or supplements take away hot flashes; Vitamin E keeps skin clear; exercise and yoga promotes sleep--stay alert to what your body is telling you. Murph

Murph,

Questions for you ... do you have any information on irregular menstrual cycles, either more frequent or less frequent and controlling that? Also, what about a bad case of the cranks? Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Keta. :D

I'm not Murph, but I went through a period of time (close to a year) where I was having cycles of 16 days 3 times in a row, then 2 normal, then they would be 16 days long again. During that time I also felt tremondous PMS systems (very sore breasts, terribly out of sorts), when normally I had very little. I was exercising regularly, taking soy protein, vitamins. I went to my doctor and he ran all kinds of test to make sure it was hormonal. (Endometrial biopsy, blood work, etc.) He had me take progestin for 3 mons. to see if that got my cycles back on track. I continued having the same problems. So now I take progestin for 10 days of my cycle, starting on day 15 and that has solved the problem. 1 or 2 times a year I will still fall short of a normal cycle, and recently I have skipped a period, but it has made such a difference, for me. I hate having to take the pills, and have considered changing to the natural progesterone cream. I agree that Christine Nothrup book will help explain what your body is going through. Take care

I agree with those who said to get a checkup to see what's up. But, assuming it is the beginning of menopause, I think we are all doing the right things by eating right and exercising. I had a complete hysterectomy in October (at age 35) and did a lot of reading prior to that to prepare me for the hot flashes, etc. While a lot of it has to do with genetics (how your mom did with hers)mental preparation is also important. And, while mine was surgical and not natural, I am going through the same things only in a much more compressed time frame.

My hot flashes are noticeable and sometimes uncomfortable, but they don't bother me to the point that I want HRT (can't have it anyway due to severe endo). I sleep nearly naked :) and try to keep the stress level down. I also do Cathe, and I've read that exercising is half the battle to menopause. In fact, this is the best I've felt in years and part of it I have to thank Cathe for!

You may also want to check out Dr. John Lee, whose website escapes me right now. He is a big proponent of trying natural progesterone (in cream form) instead of any kind of synthetic hormones. He wrote "What your doctor might not tell you about menopause" (also a perimenopause version). He explains the menopause hormonal changes well, and while you might not want to try his way, it's interesting information.

Yup...

it's just a mess. I know. Everone has valuable opinions on this thread. I thought for awhile that I was supporting the stock price of P&G (Tampax) single handedly. It was Awful. And try to travel...!!! :-mad IRREGULAR was/is an UNDERSTATEMENT.
But, while it's still here--now after two years, it's not nearly as unpredictable nor as bad...(I think the perimenopause is worse than the actual thing.)
I never used HRT--can't because I have so much breast cancer in my family. I continue the soy, Vitamin E and exercise plans.

If somebody need or wants HRT--go for it. I just never could and found a way through the maze. Murph
