Melatonin Question

I started taking Melatonin a week ago (1.5 grams per nite) .. Since then I cannot seem to sleep past 4-5 hours. I wake up and cannot get back to sleep regardless of how tired I am. The reason I started taking is was because I slept in 3 hour cycles but was usually able to go back to sleep right away. Is my dose too high or too low or is it coincidental?
Thanks for feedback!

You might also want to encourage your body's own production of melatonin: make sure your bedroom is dark by having light blocking curtains on the windows, wear a sleep mask (which will block out other light, like that from alarm clocks and electronics), if you have to get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, try to not turn on any lights (put dim night lights where they can help you find your way around).

Traci,

Do you know why difficulty sleeping? At age 51, mine is due to menopause. My sleep issues started at age 45.

You nailed it Candi! I am 43 and have been in peri for 2 years...this is by far the worst year...I am looking into Bio Identicals as I refuse to HRT... The sleeping has been an issue for 2 years it is just at the point now where my quality of life is greatly affected 3-5 days a week. Thats when I started researching the Melatonin... anyway... I KNEW someone would connect those dots;-) Thanks for taking the time to ask about it. Feeling like I'm definately on a spaceship on foreign ground these days.

Traci,

It does get better, things cool down. Mine lasted almost 15 years(very unusual). Most people do not experience 15 years of it, but perhaps from 2 to 5 years is the norm. Others don't experience at all. You are not alone.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Janie...so sorry yours was so long.

Traci,

I am on bio identicals now after 5 years of low dose birth control pills. It took approx 3 months for my body to adjust to the bio identical and I think I'm finally there. Sleeping like a baby. I take my Prometrium (progestin) and 1 mg Melatonin about 1/2 hour before bed time. 99% of the time I sleep like a baby but I still get up early. It's okay though because I'm very rested :) .

Hang in there. Like Janey said, for some it's worse than for others. Mine was pretty bad.

Janie & Candi HUGS to you both!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I keep telling myself it wont last forever.... although after 15 years I might not believe it janie;-)
I may need some advise later on the BIO route... all fairly confusing to me but its only an option if my insurance will take care of it...I understand all the labs & meds can be quite expensive. I retired last year & I'd hate to think I had to work part-time to pay for all the stuff! Anyway... Thanks again, you two really did help to lighten my load today.

Traci,

FYI. My generic 1.5 mg Estradiol (estrogen) is approx $15 per month, with or without insurance. My 100 mg Prometrium (progesterone) is the expensive one. $20 with insurance, don't know how much without but think it's quite a bit because there's no generic.

I had not symptom one. My periods just got farther and farther apart.

No hot flashes, nothing.

My GYN said I was the exception and not the norm.

However, my menopause was complete when I was 45.

I take HRT (2.5 mcg of FEMHRT) and Actonel due to some bone loss -- which have begun to become normal again after 2 years of therapy.

I weighed the risks of HRT with the benefits and have chosen to remain on HRT.

I am not really keen on having a spontaneous fracture and I am very small boned.
