LAST EDITED ON Jan-21-02 AT 12:21PM (Est)[p]Okay, you guys, I did something stupid and was wondering if any of you have medicine balls??? I was at the Fitness Wholesale and they had a 4 1/2 pound leather one discounted and on a whim, I BOUGHT IT!!! I guess it had to do with my addiction to exercise and toys that go along with that! They had a medicine ball workout video for sale by Mindy Mylrea and was wondering if anyone had tried it? Does it compare intensity-wise to Cathe strength? The lady I bought the ball from told me if I changed my mind on the ball that I could bring it back. It was the only one discounted so I took it! ($20.00 which is quite a lot for something I don't know ANYTHING about!) Any info would be appreciated or recommendations on other videos. THANX!

It must be a Scorpio trait.....addition to exercise equipment. Of course, I share this addiction! I just bought a Denise Austin updated thingy-dingy that looks like the old Thigh Master, but it has a lot of resistance levels, and you can do outer thighs with it, too. Do they have 12 step meetings for people with crowded workout rooms?!

Ha!

So true! I need HELP!! If I continue to add toys to my workout room, I will not have ANY room to workout! Bring your new "thingy-dingy" along next time we meet, HB! Second thought, I have Suzanne Sommer's Thigh Master and don't need another. Or.....DO I??? ;-)

Hey DebbieH! don't think that you have the fitness toys market cornered just cuz you're a Scorpio! I'm not far behind (I'm sure, and I'm not a Scorpio!)... LOL

About Mindy's Tape. Depends on what you're looking for. I have that tape and absolutely love it. It is about 55 minutes long. She uses the ball (and several sizes, although the one you have will probably be fine for most of the work!) It's a total body workout, however, the first 37 minutes or so are legs.

I am a pear and do better with lighter weights and more reps. This tape is GREAT for my legs (or so I believe..... don't correct me if I'm wrong!). if you have any problems with lunges though, you might not want it. She does alot of lunges. One set is called pinwheels. She does 4 forward lunges, 4 catty-corner, 4 side and then 4 back. Then continues on and does sets of 2's, singles, etc. It's a long set and quite effective. It takes her awhile to switch to the other leg! I got sore in alot of leg areas that I don't normally get sore in.

She also does this lunge, where she pulls her forward lunge leg up to her butt, and then sets it down. Does sets of 8 slow, 16 fast and does several sets on each leg. My legs are usually quite fatigued and it seems to get the job done.

She has some effective (and fun ~~ not to mention non-traditional abs), but in comparison to the legs, they seem quite brief. There's some triceps, some calf work, some core work ... OHhhhhhh and how can I forget the killer push ups? (Probably cuz I either do them on my knees or DARN! run out of time.... KimLav, where are you ~ you push up queen!) Mindy does the push ups using the ball. First a split set (one hand on the ball, one on the floor) and then eventually sets ON the ball. (not me of course.....)

I enjoy Mindy and she's alot of fun. So, that's my opinion. Again, check over at Video Fitness, as there were a couple of threads on the medicine ball tapes. Another good one (so they tell me, I don't have it....) is the OOof! Ball workout. NanC ~~ where are you???? Maybe she will chime in here!

Hope this helps! (I love to spend other people's money).

RE: Hi Cleda

Push up Queen? :) That is too funny. Now, when I do pushups, I cannot get you out of my head, or chest, or arms as the case may be. I did pushups in Bodymax yesterday and again today with PS CST. (No, I am not that pushup crazy but my date wanted to lift today and CST was on our schedule)

I do not personally own a medicine ball so I cannot be any help on this thread but I had to say hi to Cleda because she made me smile.

Ha!! Kim & Cleda!

Kim~glad you jumped in to say Hi! You guys are too funny! I did push-ups twice today in a row and they aren't my FAVORITE thing to do either, CTX-Chest ones then CTX-triceps ones. Whew! :-tired
Guess that's what happens when you do more then one body part a day!

Cleda~Thanks so much for the breakdown of the Mindy vid. It sounds right up my alley. I love a great leg workout for these stubborn legs of mine and lunges are no problem at all. I also like the core work and some different AB work. Anything done in a non-traditional way sounds great to shake up what I am doing. Thanks for helping me spend my $$$!! Looks like I need to get back to The Fitness Wholesale for that tape. I'll also see if I can find the info on the OOof Ball workout. Thanks so much, Cleda! You've been a great help.

Hey HB!

Are you still working your inner thighs with the balance ball? I've yet to get mine out and do them that way. Maybe, I'll fit it in this week. Too many areas of this bod to work on & sooo lil' time! :7

RE: Ha!! Kim & Cleda!

I still do the inner thigh deal with the fitball.....Susan's routine is a real good one and I can finish is in 40 minutes. That's what I have penciled in to do this morning.

Morning, HB!

Is that Susan Deason you are talking about? I THINK I might have that tape??? If so, there are quite a few cobwebs on it! I'll dig it out and take a look at it. I don't think I have ever used it. You're probably all done with your workout for the day and I'm still trying to get these peepers open! http://www.plaudersmilies.de/eek5.gif

12 Step Program?

Has my husband signed me up? I always want new toys, new activities, & most of all new videos. And I'm a Scorpio.

That leg work on Mindy's video sounds great. The pushups should be illegal.

RE: Morning, HB!

Sorry, Susan Graham the personal trainer I went to. I wasn't very clear on that. And I decided I needed a week off......it's been my allotted six weeks, and even tho' I wanted to go 8, I need to take a break now. So I sat around and read the paper this morning.

Hi....

my name is Nancy and I have an addiction..I also have 4 balls...and adding one more this weekend;-).

Debbie, like Cleda said....seach down Oof Ball at VF and you'll find our past threads that talked in depth about the Medicine Ball videos.

FYI, just to summerize...get Mindy's Medicine Ball workout and Michael's Oof Ball one..avoid Rock Roll and Reggae.

The ball is great to incorporate into Cathe's ab routines too. Cleda and I will be passing by Cathe's this weekend...we hope to stop in and drop some hints about using m-balls in some coming videos. Well..not to sure Cleda will be dropping hints..but I plan to;-)

Not good at dropping hints....

But I'll be backin' her up!!! :-gloat

And speaking of BALLS.... Not only will I too, get a new one this weekend, I have 5, plus I have the squooshy pink ones from WalMart!!!! They are terrific for the abs and this way I can choose what weights to use...

So, you think it's just the Scorpions who need the 12-step programs??? I don't think so! ;-)

Hello, My name is Cleda and I am a VIDIOT!

RE: Not good at dropping hints....

Hi, I'm Carol, and I'm a chocoholic AND an exercise equipment addict. Does one counteract the other? I guess only if you USE the second addiction equipment, right?!

THANX Everyone!!!

Hi! My name is Debbie and I have a potato chip addiction :7 and LUCKILY an exercise addiction too! As usual, you've all been a great help! Thanks so much! Thanks to you all, I now NEED two new vids! Next thing I need to add to my workout room is ANOTHER huge hutch to keep all my vids in! One of these days, I'm going to count them all. I hate to be a pest, but how do you use the ball in Cathe's ABS? Do you rest it on your chest or hold it behind your head? Also, if you were going to get one or two more medicine balls, what weight would you suggest for an advanced exerciser to use in the two vids you suggested? (I have the 4 1/2#, plus I have a small 3# BodyBall-would that work?)Nanc & Cleda~Have a GREAT time seeing Cathe this weekend. I am sooo jealous! Nancy, tell her I am with you in spirit and want a M-Ball workout too!!! Thanks a zillion guys!

another reason to love DVD's

Storage is a problem & it's another reason to love those DVD's!

I'm excited to hear a little bird is going to talk to Cathe about ball workouts!

Ball for the abs..

Debbie, I've used it during the standard side lateral crunch. Instead of having your hands behind your head and elbows out...I hold on to the ball, extend the arms and reach or push it out as I crunch up..it that makes sense. You can also place it between you knees and hold it with your legs for reverse crunches. And also just holding it on your chest is extra resistance in a standard crunch.

As far as balls to start with. Mindy's moves allow you to go heavier...she warms with a 4 pound and does most moves with a 6 pounder...but I think there might be an 8 in there as well. As far as Michael's Oof ball...his moves are more long limbed and core moves...you'll find that you probably will use less weight in his...a 4 1/2 is a good start with his.

Mindy's coming out with a new circuit tape using the ball, you might still find it on her site with the preorder price???. http://publish.hometown.aol.com/naconfer/images/cathechicksig.jpg

Thank you, Nancy!

Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it! I will check out Mindy's site on the new vid. I was thinking I may be able to use 1# wrist weights in combination with my 4 1/2# ball at first if I need more then just 4#'s. Thanks for your help. I like the tips on the AB work too!
