Medicine ball

Hey everyone - I'm getting Boot Camp, but don't have a medicine ball. Those suckers are pretty expensive, so I'll probably wait. Would it be just as effective to use an 8lb. dumbbell? My sister suggested a bowling ball! She just doesn't get it...

Most of the exercizes can be done with weights, though it's more awkward on some (eg it's hard on reverse crunches to keep the weight between your legs). I would recommend trying it with weights first, though, because I found out I preferred a 6lb weight to the 8lb Cathe uses on most of the exercizes (except the leg exercizes, where I go much higher -- so I ended up buying two medicine balls (both on sale, luckily, and both I do continue to use). I found medicine balls at Sportmart and Target, keep an eye out for the sales.

I bought mine at 10 lbs. at walmart. It was only around 12.00. A lot less than most websites. You can sub a dumbell. I do that just to increase the weight. It is easier to hold on to the med ball though. Bowling ball?? That would probably cost more than weights or a med ball. Yes I guess she does not get it. I get those kind of comments all of the time.

Donna re: Med Ball

Donna, Power Systems has some med balls (the slightly squeezable kind) on sale -- it looks like there are 2 and 4-pounders still available. Their regularly priced med balls aren't horribly expensive, but a good 4-pounder on sale would be a nice start for you. Here's the link to the sale med balls:

And here are their regular ones (including the orange 8-pounder that Cathe uses):

Hope this helps!

RE: Donna re: Med Ball

Thanks everyone! Yes - sis suggested the bowling ball with rubber gloves (to improve the grip). She's somewhat of a kidder, and it was over an IM, so I'm somewhat thinking she was joking...

I don't know about all of you...but I can't STAND to have gloves on while I'm sweating. Ugh! It makes my hands feel like they're suffocating.

I got the 10-pound one at Wal-Mart as well, and it works really well for me although I like to sub the dumbell when possible so I can get more/less weights as needed.
