medicine ball weight

Cathlete
I plan on picking up a medicine ball this weekend and I'm wondering if anyone knows what weight is best. Not sure what Cathe uses in the workouts or what others have found to be best. I don't want something too light, but also don't want something to heavy to utilize. Any input would be much appreciated.

Hi, Cathe uses 8 pounds. I use a 9 and a 10 lb ball.

I would try an 8 first and then when that gets easy you can always buy a heavier ball.

I think she uses an 8 pound medicine ball. I use a 6 pound medicine ball for my workouts and have found good results. I usually go lighter than Cathe for most weight lifting. Hope that's helpful.

I agree that 8# is a good weight to start with for the moves Cathe uses it for. YOu can hold it closer to your body if it's too much resistance at first, or hold it at arm's length for more resistance.

I bought an 8 lb medicine ball with the double handles from www.gaiam.com It came with a great DVD with 2 workouts on it. I think the Discovery Store had it on sale too! www.discoverystore.com

You should also look at the discovery store's 10 lb medicine ball with the strap attached to it - you can strap it to your legs or arms for great workouts!!!

I started with a 2 lb ball a few years ago and just recently graduated to an 8lb ball. I definitely noticed the difference!!

I know a 10 lb ball would be too much for me right now. If you've been doing the moves with a dumbell instead, I'd shoot for the same weight range for your first ball.

I use both 4 and 8 lbs depending on the move and my mood for the day. If you weight train and work your core regularly, 8 lbs shouldn't be too bad.

Sounds like 6 or 8 will do the trick, thanks for the feedback. Besides using it during Cathe workouts, etc. my husband and I want to use it together by doing above the head throws and chest throws, etc. Sounds like there are some cool moves you can do with two people standing or even while doing situps that would be good just to shake up the muscles into something new.
