Do you think a 10 lb medicine ball would be too much? I found one at Wal-Mart for $17.96, but the 8 lb medicine ball I can't find any cheapter than $26. I really hate to spend anymore but really want the ball instead of a weight. Just wondered if any of you were using the 8 lb ball and thought you could handle a 10 lb one okay. Also sportsmans guide has the 10 lb one about the same price. Thanks...Sami

Hi Sami,

Now, this could be just me, but not only couldn't I handle a 10# ball, I have to put down my 8# ball for some exercises!
I almost went for a 10# figuring that Cathe used a "moderate" weight to make the workout do-able for a broader range, but when I tell you an 8# ball is no joke, I'm not kidding. I'll be getting plenty of use out of mine, and it will probably be quite some time before I think I would feel the need for a heavier ball.
But I'd say judge it by the amount of weight you usually average for upper body work. If you regularly use very heavy weights for upper body work, then maybe you'll be fine with a 10# ball, but don't underestimate the 8# ball, the way Cathe uses the ball is such that a lot of weight really isn't necessary unless you're someone use to training your abs with weights.

I second Donna's response.

I have 3 and 6 lb'ers. When I read that Cathe and crew use 8 lb'ers, I thought - whoa! They can *have* the 8 lb'er! I'm stickin' with my 3 and 6 lb'ers, thankyouverymuch.

For the record, I'm starting off with 3 lb'er, when the DVD's arrive. And I might just finish with it, too!

Thanks for your replies Kathy and Donna. Guess I'll splurge and get the 8lb-er. It won't do me any good if I can't use it. I typically use the weight Cathe has or the one below it, so the 8lb gets the nod. Thanks again!

Hey Sami -

I went on ebay and found some great prices on medicine balls. I bought a 6 lb Ooof ball on ebay for about $20. It is brand new but has a few cosmetic defects (on color only)but for the price, I couldn't pass it up. I like the Ooof ball because it's solid. It's not filled with sand - it's solid rubber. One day -I'll get a 9 lb ball but for now - the 6 lb is perfect.

Happy Shopping!

Kali :)

Hi Sami,

I bought an 8lb medicine ball @ a store called Kleins All Sports at the local mall for $19.96.

Hope that helps

Kathleen

Hi Sami:

I just did Boot Camp which uses the 8-lb medicine ball in the abs section. I haven't got a medicine ball and am not sure I'm ever going to get it (space and precocious cats problem). One of Cathe's exercises (Joy?) uses an 8-lb dumbbell which mimics the ball very well. Believe me, it was tough lifting that 8-lb dumbbell doing the abs. The moves are VERY fast and, for me at least, difficult to do even without the extra weight!

So, my advice is, first try out the workouts at least once with a dumbbell. This will give you an indication of the poundage you are comfortable with. Then, you can go out a buy a medicine ball of the same weight.

P.S. The med. balls where you are are cheap. An 8-lber here in Toronto is approx $60 plus taxes (GST and PST!)
