Mats??

Wasn't there a thread somewhere about mats you could use instead of carpet? I am about to replace the carpeting in my living room, and the most worn spots are, of course, where I do my workouts. Does anyone know of matting that could be put on top of a carpet to protect it from the wear and tear--and also prevent injuries from trying to pivot, etc. on carpet?

I don't know this from experience..... but.....
There was a post of video fitness about this.

Here's the just of it......
Home depot has some cheap ones that lock together. You will need to hold the corners down with weights because the can slip around otherwise. The caviet is usually no one at home depot will know what you are talking about so you'll have to find them on your own. Just about everyone who has them has asked for them and were told they don't have em, but low and behold found them.

Good Luck,
Dawn

I tried this and they still slip all around pretty bad. One thing that helps is to put very heavy plates inside the risers for the step, like 50 pounds on each side. This still doesn't keep them totally still, but really helps. And the carpet seems to get flattened even through the pads! Very tragic for the carpet. I have given up and just put the sofa on the bad spots when I am through exercising.

They are made for use in horse trailers but they are about 3/4 inch thick and have a nice cushion feel when I am doing step on them. I purchased 3 of them and put them side by side on top of my carpet. They haven't shifted at all and I have been doing step on them for about 6 months now. I can tell you my knees have been thanking me especially on higher impact tapes like IMAX and MIC! Just my 2 cents worth ;-)

p.s. Beware these are heavy and a little cumbersome so it is not something you are going to pick up off the carpet and put away each day. Mine are down for the duration (thankfully my workout area is downstairs):D

I don't know whether this will help... but look under "Open Discussion" on Aug 25 2001 with the title "Oh, honeybunch". They were discussing about GreatMats, may be it's something you could use. I am thinking about using one of those when my DH starts complaining about me ruining the carpet...

I have my mats from Great Mats on a cement basement floor, so I can't vouch for how they would perform over a carpet. You may want to contact the company to find that out. Other then that, they are great!!!!

Thanks! I have printed all of these suggestions and will work from there.

I bought a black rubber type of mat that is used to put your recumbent bike or treadmill on top of. It says on the box also for steppers and wont slide. But they must have meant wont slide on non-carpeted floors because I put it down on top of my carpet and they slid a great deal during my step workouts, so much so I felt unsafe. Good thing I saved the receipt!
