Maribeth, yet another question...

Cathlete
I really need your professional advice. I have been having sciatica pain for two months now, MRI showed two bulging disc. I have an appointment with a Neurosurgeon in three weeks.

My question for you is, who should I see - after I am recovered from what ever we do - to tell me exactly what kind of exercise I can do. I mean after I finish with physical therapy. I'm thinking I need some kind of exercise specialist. (Not someone who thinks walking is all anyone needs.) I'm just not sure who to look for. Any advice would be so appreciated!

I have been good since the pain started and have not lifted anything heavy. Actually, when your in pain there is not too much temptation to do much of anything. I do get a little bumed when I think about the new tapes ariving at my house and not being able to do them!

Thanks so much!
Susan

Susan,

I have spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal column) that causes a considerable amount of pain at times. So, I can feel your pain here!

I went through intense physical therapy back in July & was told by my pt to never do any leg work. YEAH RIGHT THAT'S GONNA HAPPEN! Her reasoning was that it tightens up the hamstrings which puts a strain on the lower back. I decided to ignore that little piece of advice & sought out an experienced exercise specialist (I happen to have a friend that is one). He helped ease me back into my normal routine. Now I'm pretty much pain free & can lift heavier than before I started having symptoms!

So, while I'm not Maribeth, I suggest you find an exercise specialist/physiologist. You'll not be sorry.

Thanks Deborah! I'm glad to hear everything is working out for you. Your experience proves you need to find the right person for you own needs!

Thanks again

Dear CATHE,

I hope this message reaches you. I really enjoy the video "All Step." However, although I've been into aerobics religiously for 21 years, this is my first attempt at step aerobics.

My frustration is that I don't know how to do the moves, which mostly occur very rapidly. Is there any way, Cathe, that you could e-mail or snail mail me an explanation of these moves so that I can get a good workout.

Thanks much, and keep up the great instructing!

Sincerely,
Sue Mroz

Hey, Susan!
Sorry I'm so long in seeing your message. We got a new computer and I've been trying to get everything going.

If you can, look for a sports/ortho PT for your rehab and see if the PT refers to any clinical exercise physiologist or very skilled personal trainer for post rehab work. If not, look for someone who specializes in post rehab training.

Feel free to e-mail me any time and I'll see if I can get some names of professionals in your area. Like Deborah says, anybody that tells you that you can "never" do a particualr activity is bad news.

Take care!
Maribeth
