Making a mini-topper

Just this morning I liberated a full-sized Step and four risers from the Salvation Army for $2.50!

I'm thinking about making a mini-topper but I'd like to hear from folks who have actually made these how easy they are. Did you have to rent any tools? I have the usual household stuff but no electric saws, etc.

Now, if only Cathe would sell these ....
