Makeup for teens

Hi, All!

I want to give my 13-year-old a few makeup "starter items" as stocking stuffers this year. I know she's interested, and I want to find things that let her feel like she's wearing makeup, but keeping it fairly natural. I'm covered on lip glosses, and I think I'll just get her a pressed powder to even her complexion out. But does anyone have suggestions for eye shadow brands/colors? And what do you think about mascara? I think I'm struggling with it because I'm not entirely ready to see my "baby's" face made up for school! But I was a product junkie at that age, and still am -- so what can I expect??

Sounds like fun. I still wear pretty light makeup. I have never liked pressed powder, have you considered finding her tinted moisterizer? It may be worth going somewhere that a professional can help her play with colors. One of the makeup counters at the mall (I went to the Clinque counter when I was a teen) or set up a Mary Kay or Avon consult. This will let you see her in mascara to see if it works for a natural look.
Maybe a brown mascara would bring some definition without looking too old.
I think it will be most fun if you get a cheap eyeshadow palette with lots of colors. Since you are a "product junkie" you two will have lots of fun trying different colors on each other and laughing at the really bad combinations.

I would definitly have to suggest JANE cosmetics- it is designed specifically for teens (well.. it was back in the day when they first came out I remember it was all over the teen magazines :)

Also, if you can get to a Sephora or department store, check out TOO FACED.. they have these adorable little kits called "quickies" that ar color themed like "Beach Bunny", "Miss Sixty" and "Glamour Girl".

As a teen Im sure she'd appreciate a name brand cosmetic and actually, most higher-end makeup brands have little kits and pallettes with coordinating colors for real great prices and they're pretty goof-proof for beginners!

As for mascara, that's one area, like powder, where you don't want to go cheap (they'll all look cheap when applied and we don't want that :)

The same brand as the kits if you get one would probably be fine. Otherwise, Ive always been a fan of L'Oreal as far as drug store brands go.

If you have a Kohls near you, they usually have big box sets of eyeshadow, blushes, lip colors, nail polish etc. around this time of year that are fun to play with. They are usually pretty inexpensive too. When my DD started wearing makeup, I just told her that school makeup had to be "natural looking" but if she wanted to wear a bit more for family holidays, events etc, that was okay. ITA on the Sephora suggestion! In my experience, their salespeople really encourage younger girls to go natural looking, and not look super made up. They also teach them how to apply it which is a big plus IMO.

What about mineral cosmetics?

They can be used for light coverage, and many contain all-natural ingredients. And you can get foundation, eyeshadows and liners, and blush which can also be patted on over lip gloss for lip tint).

I personally think mascara is a bit much for someone that age-- makes them look a bit too grown up-- but a mineral liner could give more definition to the eyes (and be used dry or wet, depending on the look wanted).

Along with the usual Bare Minerals and some other well-known ones, I recommend Larenim ( www.larenim.com ...easy to remember, because its "mineral" spelled backwards). They offer sample sizes that last quite a long time if you don't go heavy with them. It's fun to mix and match the eye colors.

They also have very nice brushes.
 
I vote third for Sephora!! If I were you, I'd just go to Sephora, tell a consultant you have a 13-year-old, and let them direct you to the hip lines for teens. :) Then get a few of those little compact sets for her. I think the hipper the better and they know what teens like!!
 
Yeah definitly get her in there at some point for a little tutorial! Or see if they have a little kit with tips in them.. no one ever wants makeup lessons from mom lol!
I won't even tell you the terror I went through when I got my first makeup (at the same age.. loose items from the drug store = bad idea hehe ;)
I went through hell at school and Ill certainly admit, I had no clue how to put any of it on lol!
 
Whatever you get, teach her how to make-up without looking made up. At 12, my daughter asked for make-up(through a power point presentation, quite clever I thought), so we shopped together, and she practiced with it at home to my approval before she wore it out. She is a fairly non girly girl though and at 15 she rarely wears make-up, she does not like to be bothered.

I see too many junior high and high school girls all junked up with heavy eye make-up, tis sad.

HI, you should take her to one of the better dept stores for a makeup lesson, way back when I took my daughter to merle norman

Thanks for all the great ideas! I agree -- good application is key -- and she might not love learning that from me! I think a trip to Sephora or Clinique is the way to go. I had thought about a gift certificate to one of those places, so maybe I can get her some small item that I'm sure will work, and put a gift card with it. That way she can be involved in choosing, she can get tips from someone who works with teens and makeup, and we can all be happy! If we do Sephora, we can look into Bare Minerals, too.

I had actually ordered the Sephora Piiink So Belle palette, lots of colors and aimed at younger people, but it arrived with the bottom layer broken. I'm sending it back; I guess we can check it out in person. Certainly, they have plenty of choices (fun, fun, fun!).

I love Bare Minerals, both for myself and my daughter. You don't break out, and the coverage is natural looking and the brushes and colors allow for a lot of options and experimentation. :)
 
I took Katie to the makeup counter last year, Fashion Fair. The woman was really nice. She showed Katie how to apply make up and I purchased cleaners for her face. Katie just wears mascara (which disappears from my makeup--hmmm--I wonder how that happens) and lip gloss. On occasion Katie will wear just a touch of eye shadow and powder. Nothin' like a little Miss America or Hootchie Kootchie girl.

I always liked Bonnie Bell. Also Mark by Avon isn't bad either.

Don't forget skin care, such as cleansers, scrubs and moisturizers.
