Mail Service Suspended for Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007

President Bush has requested all federal agencies to be closed to honour the passing of former President Gerald R. Ford on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd, which means no mail deliveries and no postal offices open.
The former President will be buried in Grand Rapids, MI on Wednesday and for the many residents like myself are dealing with traffic delays, street closures, airport delays from the government officials, national news media, etc. being here for the event.

Lori,
yes, I live in Grand Rapids. And, I know where Wayland is too.
This is cool!

hey guys! i'm in kalamazoo :) is it really crazy in g.r.? my sister lives in kentwood. i went to college at aquinas. it is all of g.r. or mostly east grand rapids?

Hey JT! I'm in Muskegon, just a hop, skip & a jump away! I won't be attending the services (of course) but I will be there in spirit.

Downtown GR and EGR for the church. The motorcade will be coming from the airport and they are expecting to close down or delay the interstate or the city streets for them to get there.
My work has a branch in KZOO, which I've been there before and I go to South Haven from West Main in KZOO.

I love South Haven! I actually get my hair cut in Grand Haven (crazy, huh?). Have you been to Clementines in South Haven for the onion rings? Do you know what church in east G.R.? I looked on woodtv but they didn't say.

Grace Episcopol Church, which is near Fulton. A beautiful old church with lots of stained glass and big Oak trees outside.
No, I've never been to Clementines but I hear it's REALLY good. I would like to go on a weekend. If I thought I would ever get remarried, I would like my wedding night to be at the Yelton Manor and Guest House.

I'm a postal worker that doesn't have the day off. Of course I didn't have Christmas or New Years off (27 years service).

The carriers, window clerks, customer service people have the day off.

The unseen "necessary" processing and distribution people have to have work.

I liked President Ford, I don't know that I'd spend the day commemorating even if had it off.

Dave-
So sorry you got passed up in the day off.... My best guess is that President Fords friends would have gladly taken the day off to remember & honor.... This "universal day off" is unfortunately going to find very few who will even recall why they got an extra day! Not being mean but honestly.... how many people even think about all the other holidays like veterens day, memorial day, etc...

Actually, I've thought more on this and most of the federal government is at work today, non essential people were given the day off.

I agree with you on significance of holidays, most people don't know and worse don't care.

but you forgot to mention you are getting holiday pay for working.... so nothing to feel sorry for you about! you either get the day off or get holiday pay....

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

For forced holidays I do get holiday pay or a comp day. Holiday pay equals a days pay on top of what you would have gotten for staying home.

I would ask you what would be more important to you Thanksgiving, Christmas etc with your family or some Wednesday 3 months from now?

I'm not asking anyone to feel sorry for me, I just want to enlighten people when they say that "Mail service is suspended". It may not be delivered to your box but trust me, its moving in the system 24/7/365. We didn't even shut down for anthrax. Carriers in Colorado were working extra shifts on 12/24 and 12/25 to deliver mail delayed by the snowstorms. We never shut down.
