Lunge vs. lunge

Quick question: Is there any benefit to doing forward and backward lunges as opposed to just doing standing (stationary) lunges? I have been doing the Muscle Max workout for a couple of weeks (my first Cathe) and would like to replace the leg exercises of that workout with the standing legs from Gym Style Legs... the only problem is the "moving" lunges. I feel all wobbly and unbalanced and they seem to make my knees hurt more. Can I just sub without losing too much benefit?

I'm no expert, but I think the forward and backward lunges make the glutes fire more when you move from one position to the other because you have to push off from your heel to change positions. That being said though, if a move is too difficult or is uncomfortable then modifying is always a good idea. You could also do some, but not all of the forward and backward lunges and then switch to the stationary lunges. The more you do them the better your balance will become, but don't do anything that is going to hurt your knees.

Amy,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, at this point I don't think that my glutes need to fire more than they already are! I will start trying to build up to the forward and backward lunges though as I get stronger... thanks for the suggestion.
