Lower back dimples

This is probably weird, but my number one fitness goal has been to develop those dimples on the lower back either side of the spine just above the butt. Is there an exercise that's good for that? I've read some things that claim that those dimples are genetic -- well, my two kids have them, so I hope maybe I have some hope of having them too. Deadlifts? Supermans? What does it take? I just want to HAVE them.

That's funny that you brought this up. I have always thought that they were genetic. I have them and my husband always says that he loves them. My little baby has them and I thought there was nothing cuter than a baby's bottom, but his bottom with butt dimples are the CUTEST! Anyway, I say you've either got them or you don't, anyone else know for sure?

I don't know if they're genetic or not, but I'm sure if you have any fat covering the area you can't see them. And people store fat in different areas and have a harder time getting rid of fat in some areas than others.

These dimples are anatomically known as the location of the posterior superior illiac spine (PSIS). The PSIS is covered by a big slab of fascia (like a tendon flattened out)called the thoracolumbar fascia which is not technically contractile tissue. I am a massage therapist and can tell you that I have seen very noticable dimples on large people and conversely no dimples on some very lean people.
I'm going to venture to say that if you wanted to try to 'create' these dimples, like Kathryn already stated, you would want to get rid of any overlying fat and then perhaps concentrate on latissimus dorsi (attaches onto the thoracolumbar fascia) and gluteus maximus development as these two muscles surround the PSIS and bulking up a little around them ?MAY? make them more visible. I think you are on the right track with supermans and deadlifts along with some gluteal challenge. HTH

Wow -- thanks for the knowledgable and detailed response! I appreciate it. I'm glad to know I'm on the right track. Darn genetics.
