Low Max on a 6" step

LauraMax

Cathlete
I had Low Max on schedule for this morning & I was feeling a little tired so I figured I'd just do it on a 6" step instead of 8" (LM is pretty much the ONLY step workout I do on an 8" step these days).

Well, I was pleasantly suprised to discover I burned only 5 less cals and enjoyed the workout SO much more! I don't think I'll ever do Low Max on an 8" step again. In fact, I don't know if I'll ever use an 8" step for anything ever again.:p

RE: Low Max on a 6

Hi LauraMax.
That is good to know. I am going to be doing Low Max tomorrow and was going to try it on a 6" step. 8" is too much for my knees!
Did you still feel the burn in the legs?

RE: Low Max on a 6

I've never been able to do LM on the 8" step!!! Heck, I've been having issues with my knees lately and have been doing all my step on just the riser and have actually been burning more calories because I can give more energy to the moves instead of having to concentrate on making sure I don't trip over the step!:p

RE: Low Max on a 6

Thanks for the tips!

I only use 8 inches on the step, but I should try the 6!

Thank you! :)

I also want to protect my young knees!

RE: Low Max on a 6

Hi Laura. I've tried doing it on an 8" several times and it just wears me out too quickly for some reason. I have much more energy to get through the whole thing on a 6" vs. an 8". Same with LIC. I think I just feel much more comfortable on a 6" and I probably get the same results, or close to it.

I tend to hit my toe on the edge of the step when I use 8" and it's really distracting...and annoying!

RE: Low Max on a 6

I've tried LM on 8" and never enjoy it. Too exhausting. Besides, I'm only 5'2" and its hard as heck to step up that high.

RE: Low Max on a 6

I'm 5'0 and have a knee issue so I just use my bench - no risers at all. I can make it as easy or as intense as I want my workout to be. And I trip if I add a riser. Not use to it I suppose and then my workout slacks off because I feel like I'm gonna go flying right over the step!x( :7

I know, I'm 5'3" & I have the same problem. But I always did LM on the 8" step b/c I figured I'd burn more fat. I'm so happy that it's not the case. :) Also happy that it's now a workout I can look forward to instead of dread.

Charlene, yes, I definitely still felt the burn, especially b/c most of the blasts are floor work. For blasts that use the step I think I actually felt it more b/c I could go deeper w/the squats & lunges.

RE: Low Max on a 6

After years of doing step workouts on 8", and suffering with back and knee problems, I do all step workouts on just my riser and look forward to doing any and all step workouts. Want to keep going for years to come (I am 61 now and want to keep going). maryann

RE: Low Max on a 6

Mary Ann, 61 and doing Cathe workouts. You are an inpiration! Awesome job! Thanks for sharing.:)

RE: Low Max on a 6

MaryAnn We are the same age and I am also doing Cathe. But use my step with no risers. Until recently I was doing 6" and getting worn out too quickly. Lowering the step has made all the difference.

RE: Low Max on a 6

WOW, this is really surprising to me. I thought that because it was low impact, that it should be done on the taller step 'cause otherwise it would be too easy. I'll have to try it. My poor knees will probably thank me. Lately though, everything from my hips to my elbows to my shoulders have been "clicky". Ah well, the joys of getting older.....

RE: Low Max on a 6

Woo-hoo! Thanks, LauraMax!

I used to do everything on an 8" step but found that my knees were starting to hurt. So, I have been doing everything but the low impact on a 6" and low on 8". I am VERY HAPPY to know it doesn't make a big difference. I am SO going to use a 6" step!!! :)

I was also surprised to see your chart with calories burned and see that some of the workouts I thought would really burn off calories didn't and vice versa.

I too am so pleased to hear this.

Lorie where is the chart with the calories burned? I would love to see that.

Well off to do Lowmax on a 6" step. Yipee.

RE: Low Max on a 6

Hmmm...I've been doing this one on an 8" because I figured it would work my quads more while I recover from my knee surgery. I'm a 5 footer myself, so I'll try it on the 6" next time.

RE: Low Max on a 6

Funny to read this tonight because I was just thinking today that I should start keeping a record for calories burned when I do a workout. I wear my HRM every time and write it in my journal, but I don't have it all in a spreadsheet or anything yet.
