Love the new videos.....but....

I ordered the new videos since I was new to Cathe when the preorder first came out, then was taping her shows on FitTV and doing those. The issue I am having is, all the high impact moves (which I love) and even the step aerobics , are bothering my back (old herniated discs in there). I only do the cardio and weight workouts together, cause I find they are more time efficient for me and have been getting terrific results, but I don't want to stop because of my back...Any suggestions? I do go to the chiropractor to get cracked and that does help, but still having back issues after I get done working out. Also, I am an old pro at exercise, so it is not an issue of form.
Cathe, you do a terrific job with your videos and thank you , thank you for all that you do!
Thanks for the advice,
Tee

First off I'm not a pilates fan. However, I have suffered from extreme back pain from a mountain bike accident last August (a year ago). I went from Dr. to Dr. to Dr. and finally I'm seeing a therapist that specializes in postural/biomechanical work. They aren't easy to find, it's a pretty unique specialty. In the few weeks I've seen her all my pain (not just my back but old achey injuries) has improved more than any other therapy/injection/PT/NMT/etc I have received in the last year. She uses Pilates concept of "neutral spine" and she said once you are in allignment your body can then heal itself. Now I know this won't cure a herniated disk, but maybe it could give your spine the support it needs so you can workout the way you want? I never thought I could so some of the activities I now do again, including riding a bike. :)

Hi Tee,

Not Cathe, but I've sufferd from a herniated disc and I know just what you mean. Have you tried modifying the w/o by switching to low impact moves in place of the high impact? Low impact doesn't have to mean low intensity. I don't do any jumps or propulsion moves of any kind (well, right now I'm not doing any step because of a hip injury). You need to listen to your body. I definitely wouldn't do high impact moves if it causes pain or other symptoms. Good luck to you.;-)

Hi Tee. I'm relatively new to Cathe as well. I'm a long time Firm user. I had heard so many great things about Cathe but I was intimidated to try her workouts because I also have a back injury. I've had 3 back surgeries in a 2 year period. I had 2 ruptured lumbar disks with nerve root inmpingement so surgery was my only option all three times. I ordered several Cathe workouts in addition to the club size step. I have to say, I love lowmax! It is exactly what I need. Since I've had it for a few weeks, I'm only doing the first 4 intervals with the blasts and I'm using a 6" step instead of 8". I know that I can always take out the blasts or use the 4" platform if I'm having some issues that particular day. The people here are great and will give you lots of good advice. I don't post much but I'm on here daily reading...
Good luck!

I'm not sure if it will help your particular situation, but you can definitely modify high impact moves (there are some moves in IMAX3--the jumping off the step onto the floor moves-- that I will never do because they are excessive impact for me, but I easily modify by either walking down off the step or doing a lower impact move).

If there are particular moves you want ideas for modifying, I suggest you ask about them in the 'Video questions and comments" forum, where other experienced Catheites can give you lots of ideas.

Also, I find that working out on puzzle mats (over a wood floor) helps absorb the shock of many moves. I'm able to do more impact (and work up to some of the moves I avoided previously) since I started using mats. I got several sets from Home Depot (I've also seen them in Walmart), enough to make an 8 foot by 8 foot covered area.

As your leg muscles get stronger, they can also help cushion the impact of the moves. And strengthening your core (abs and lower back especially), can help support your spine more. Try to hold your abs and back firm (like you just tightened up a corset--but not super tight or so it interferes with your breathing) when working out to add that support.

Thank you all for your suggestions. And I do know how to tone down the high impact moves...I just hate to....but if it keeps me exercising as opposed to having to stop due to injury, I know that is what I must do. As my doc says I am my own worst enemy when it comes to exercising. I get that wonderful endorphin blast and will just ignore anything my body is trying to tell me and keep going...
I have taken the past 3 days off of exercise and will start back w/ Cathe tomorrow.
By the way, when I did the premix on the new step video, step & weights combined. It is a 70 min wkout and my heartrate monitor said I burned 486 calories! Now that is what I am talking about! :)Once again, thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I do appreciate you all.

Please stop bumping all these threads. If you want to ask a question or add a comment, that's great. But bumping a dozen or so threads just to bump.... :(

bump to bring the other 3 year old thread down

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!
