Long-legged workout pants?

Hello, my fellow Catheletes!

Up until now I've always done my home / land workouts in a sports bra and short-legged (mid-thigh, no longer) workout shorts. However, I've lost my desire to cope with the chills I get from working out - and sweating - in my downstairs, always-chilly-in-the-wintertime workout area. I've kicked over the traces and bought a couple pair of ankle-length workout pants with drawstring waist, as well as some light lycra long-sleeved tops to wear either during the workout or during the post-workout stretch to combat the chills.

For those of you who wear long-legged workout pants during cardio and/or lower-body workouts, do you find that you get very heated, or overheated, especially during power step or plyo work? Or does it make any difference to you?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hey there! I just made the switch with the colder weather. I have always worked out in shorts or at most, workout capris. But I found these terrific yoga pants from Old Navy recently. They fit me perfectly and came in tall so I was a happy girl. :) Anyway, I workout in the morning when the house is cold and I couldn't bear the thought of shorts. I like wearing the pants. I think I am just as comfy temperature wise (like anyone can be comfy during IMAX 3, right?) but I don't feel like I notice that I'm wearing pants or wish that I was wearing shorts.

Wow, I just re-read this and I'm babbling away...anyway, I say make the switch. I think it is just as comfortable.

Hi A-Jock!
I can totally empathize with you since I also workout in our downstairs. We have a bi-level so technically it's not a "basement", but it's still so cold right now!

I workout in a tank top and shorts, sometimes wearing a pull-over sweatshirt just for the warm-up. Honestly, about 5 minutes in, I'm getting heated and off comes the sweatshirt and on comes the FAN! ;) I tried working out in pants one morning and just couldn't handle it. I got too overheated and the thought actually crossed my mind of finishing in my underwear! I ended up pulling up the pant legs over my knees but it was still uncomfortable.

Anyway, I can totally relate to that feeling of sweating/chills at the same time! I think if you try a light sweat shirt during the warm up and cool down, you may be okay. That has been working for me.

Good luck!

Hey my fellow Minnesotan!

I hear ya on the cold but I have just the opposite problem. My basement is always warm in the winter because we keep the door closed so the heat stays down there. Yet in the summer, it is especially cold when we run the air conditioning.

That said...I have always worked out in pants & capris. Never liked shorts except when I'm running on the TM. I have a huge fan that is running throughout my cardio workouts and keeps me from over-heating.

I agree with dressing in light layers that you can shed as you heat up and put back on after the workout to ward off the chills.

HTH:)

Hi Aquajock,

I wear them all the time in the Winter months. I don't even know I'm wearing them. The only time I really notice it, is when I'm taking them off. I have to peal mine off. Hey, you do stay warm though, not a big price to pay.

Hi Ajock...I live in WI, so understand the kind of cold you have! My house is about 60 degrees when I exercise and I find that capris are great. Right now my favorites are the Champion. I put on a tshirt to start off, but after 5/10 minutes, I'm down to my exercise bra!

Thanks, everyone! I'll give it a spin this coming Sunday, my next land-cardio workout. I'll plan on peeling off the shirt if I need to.

DH winterized all of the windows downstairs, as well as the glass door in front of the fireplace (which draws in an enormous amount of cold), so that should help some.

Man, I hate sustained cold weather. Which is, of course, why I live in Minnesota.

Thanks again!

Hi Aqua Jock-

I live in Michigan (another "MI" state) and in the winter usually wear long pants... I go to the gym frequently, so I don't worry so much about the cold, but I wear them mostly bec. my legs are scaly, pale, and not so clean shaven during the winter months. ( sorry, probably TMI.) :)

Anyways, I like longer lycra pants esp during higher impact activities, it feels like you get more support on your legs with the tightness.. I swear when I'm running or doing something like Imax, I have more endurance when wearing some lycra based long pants.

Not sure how much cash you want to throw towards your new "look" but if you are looking for super quality.. sugoi makes nice ones. I get them at: www.sportsbasement.com
where there are some decent deals.

I also like Target's leggings too.. you can't beat the price and they are pretty good as well.

Take care, Lynn M.
