Locks of Love - Hair donation

Has anyone ever donated their hair to this? I have very straight hair and I grew it out because I hadn't had long hair since I was a little girl (plus my husband likes long hair - what is it with men and long hair?) but now I've had enough of it. I am getting it cut tonight. Length will be just above the shoulders but below the jawline. I got on their website and it says you have to have at least 10 inches. I think I do, but my hair is layered and some of it won't be 10 inches. Should I go ahead and send it anyway? My salon isn't a participating salon so I'm doing it on my own. What do you guys think?

Kimbra,

I had long hair for the bulk of my life and several months ago decided to get it cut and LOVE it. My salon is a participating salon and so they cut/took/sent it for me. But I didn't realize this at the time I was researching how to do it, so I also checked into it. I think you should still send it if, when you are done, there seems to be a good portion of the hair that is at least 10 inches. Perhaps about 1/2-2/3 of the hair.

How are you getting it cut?

Good luck!
Mattea :)

I have a hair magazine that has a picture of Hunter Tylo (she is on the soap The Bold and the Beautiful). It's the length of at the base of the neck (not quite touching the shoulders) and it's layered (kind of a choppy looking bob cut).

Kimbra,
I think I HAVE that haircut, lol:D So far I'm loving it, but it sure has changed how I have to wear my hair to workout.

I think you should go for it. I was always curious about that 10 inch requirement (where is Shelley when you throw that high hanging curve ball anyway? }( ), but I'm pretty sure a chemo patient would be thrilled to have your beautiful hair, layered or not. And it's a really great thing for you to do, you should feel really good about it.

As long as most of it has 10 inces you will be fine. If you go to the Locks of Love web site you can find guidelines and directions for mailing it in yourself in casa the hairstylist you like doesn't do it.

My DD did this last summer and it is a wonderful blessing to many kids!

My niece has made us of this program and it has made a world of difference for her as she gone through chemo and radiation treatments. I think anyone who donates through this program kicks a$$ because it means so much to people facing cancer!!

Hi, Kimbra!

If the majority of it is 10in., thats fine! As someone else suggested, stick to the guidelines on the Locks of Love website.
I am a hairdresser, and used to do this for clients at a salon where I worked. Just so you know, they wont accept hair that is overly colored,and/or chemically processed. A little bit of coloring is ok as long as the hair is healthy and strong. Any kind of hair that has bleached highlights will probably not be used. Not because people in need wouldn't want it, but because they have a process of chemically treating all the hair donations to get the hair ready to be made into wigs. Apparently the hair has to be very healthy or it would be ruined in this process. Hope this helps, and good luck!!! Nancy~~

What a great idea! I was thinking of getting my 8 year old twins' hair cut into a bob because their hair is thin and long. I think they've only had their hair cut a handful of times in their life. Their hair used to grow very slow, not anymore. In the fall, they had 3 to 4 inches cut off and it's grown in already. I just measured their hair and they can lose more than 10 inches and still have a nice bob cut.

Now, as far as my 9 year old dd, she won't donate her hair. It's her glory! LOL I wouldn't ask her since her hair has a very strange texture from having ectodermal dysplaysia. I've only seen another person with hair like hers and this girl had ED. ED affects the skin, sweat glands, nails, hair and teeth. Dd's teeth have taken the brunt of ED. Depending on the type of ED a person has, they can be bald or have very thin tufts of fine hair all their life. There's a ED foundation that helps provide children affected with ED with wigs and dental work. DD has a thick head of hair that almost touches her rear end. The texture looks almost as if it has been crimped with the finest crimping tool. After it's washed and dried, it looks so perfect like it's not real. So, I would feel really bad if someone got her hair thinking it wasn't real hair. LOL

ETA: Although dd's hair looks different, it is so beautiful!

You can send it. They will take any donation.
Remember. Locks of love gives cancer patients wigs(non human) their hair will come back. Kids will scalp hair disorders(alopecia etc, burns) get the human hair.
They take approx 10 pony tails to make a wig. It is a cost of about 2500 to do a wig.

The shorter hair is sold for mens wigs to cover costs. So, send any amount.

Have it washed and cut . Have the stylist gumband it in sections . You will get more and send it in.Bag it in a zippie, dry.
I am not a participater, but i save them and when i get a bag full, i send them in.
