LETS GET INSANE 8/2

Morning ladies. No workout today for me. Today is a day of much needed rest. Hope you ladies are enjoying your weekend.

Good morning, Insanitinas! This morning, after almost a solid week of what I call "Impactus Interruptus" (a weird week in which I got almost no impact-oriented cardio in), I did Max Cardio Conditioning and Pure Cardio (omitted the warm-up and prestretch in Pure Cardio) as a maiden voyage for both of these workouts.

I call this particular format of Shaun's "One Long String of Pain" (or, in this case, one long string and one shorter string), because he simply blasts you through one-minute intervals without any repeats as in his circuit-style routines. I really, really liked it. I must note that I had to hit the "pause" button several times between intervals to hydrate, and the height of my legs on the high switch kicks left something to be desired. However, I'm very pleased with the fact that I didn't flake out during any of the intervals themselves until the last two intervals of "Pure Cardio" (I think these were Suicide Jumps {much like Cathe's Squat-thrust terminators} and Plank Push-ups, a new goal drill for me). Also did "Cardio Abs" immediately afterward; I do like the cardio-style warm-up replete with its high tuck jumps and wide-leg high tuck jumps for the obliques. My form got better with "Cardio Abs" in this second go-round with it.

I plan now on saving Insanities for Sundays only for now, simply so that I don't do them so often I get bored with them (a common problem for me, with my "anything worth doing is worth doing to death" mentality). I do plan, however, on squirting in a cardio circuit or two after my main cardio routine on Wednesdays, probably ones that include challenge drills like floor switch kicks or push-up jacks. Or both. Who knows?

Make it a good workout day, peeps!

What a workout A Jock!! I have previewed all the discs, but i am sticking to the suggested rotation and trying hard to stick to the nutrition guide. I have lost 4 pounds so far and i am pleased with the way my lower half is leaning out.
Today was cardio plyo circuit and I had a hard time with it today, probably due to the fact my 5year old granddaughter stayed with me last night and I didn't get a lot of quality sleep. Even so, I did plow through it but I hit the wall on the last cycle of the last circuit and found I could only do about 30 seconds each of ski abs and in/out abs. Oh well, i figure everyone has off days. Have a great sunday ladies!!

Like kariev, Today is my rest day. I was supposed to golf 18 holes but my friend screwed up her elbow so we canceled for another time.

Annette, Wow! I am spent when I finish just PC, I could not imagine doing more.

Brenda, Way to go with the fit test yesterday. and 4 pounds in two weeks is great. I'm sure after a good nights sleep you'll be back at it.

For me I'll be doing both Monday's and Tuesdays workout tomorrow (minus the extra warm -up) since I'm outta town next weekend again.

I did my fit test today! I now fully comprehend every word written about the INSANITY of these workouts. I better melt away! :D
Switch Kicks ~ 70 (i will be honest, I THINK I counted correctly, but towards the end there could have been some single kicks counted)
Power Jacks ~ 47
Power Knees ~ 92 (feeling kind of cocky up til now)
Power Jumps ~ 35 (okay where is the oxygen??)
Globe Jumps ~ 12 ( are you kidding me?!?!)
Suicide Jumps ~ 12 (really starting to hate turbo girl)
Push-up Jacks ~ 12 (why am I doing this to myself!?!?)
Low Plank Obliques ~ 26 (please God, make it stop)
finished by laying flat out face first on the floor whimpering for my mommy
Terrified of tomorrow!

great fit test! your going to love insanity.

Bring on The Crazy!

Hi everyone! I joined the insanity today and did my fit test. Becky, I laughed at your comments. I felt much the same way. Here's my numbers:

switch kicks - 62 (my goal is more to improve the height of my kicks, than the number)

power jacks - 59 (not so hard after years of Cathe's plyo-jack intervals!)

power knees - 101 (really wanted to do the other side to balance out the numbness in my supporting leg!)

power jumps - 38 (I took Chris's approach and did them controlled and steady. Tanya's a freaking frog!)

globe jumps - 9 (much harder than I thought they would be! Had to take breaks between the last 3 rounds)

suicide jumps - 21 (again, thank you Cathe!)

push up jacks - 30 (who thought of this torture?!)

low plank obliques - 31/side, or 62 total. Argh.

In all, the drills were intense, but there was so much rest in between that the overall workout was fine. I'm guessing Shaun's not so kind in the actual workouts!

After the Fit Test I did STS M2, WK1 chest. Last month I did STS meso 1, as produced, inserting my own cardio. This month I'm going to do meso 2 as one body part/day, before the Insanity workout of the day. I may not do the M2 Leg workouts, as I think there might be more than enough of that in the Insanity workouts. Any opinions from those of you who are well into the program? Would you even consider adding leg work?

I also do some group fitness instructing, and personal training. So, I'm obligated to teach cycle classes, some weight training, and do some running. This will mean that I'll be extending my weeks to fit in the other workouts. For example, I'm teaching a spin class tomorrow (Monday), so I'll just do the STS M2 WK 1 Shoulder routine at home, and teach the cycle class. I'll do Plyo Cardio Circuit on Tuesday, along with M2 WK 1 Triceps. My 60 day Insanity rotation will be more like 70 days or something like that, but that's okay by me. No need to rush through this torture. I'll let it linger like a 3rd degree burn.

Kariev - enjoy your rest day. I usually go bonkers on those days, although I know they're necessary. If I don't get my Attitude Adjustment Hour every day, I'm just not happy.

AquaJock - how many appliances in your house can you power if we hooked you up with a cable? Jeepers, you are one feisty lady! That was quite the workout you did today!

Dawn - you're doubling up? I thought these workouts would be too intense for that? It's doable, is it? Do you get to have two recovery drinks, too? :D

Have a great day!

Hi ladies!
Sandra raised some great questions that I'm wondering about as well.

I am overweight...by a lot (almost 40 pounds), but I've been working out consistently 2-3 hours a day 5-6 days a week for 1 year as of August 1st.
I was eating ALL my exercise calories so it's taken a year to lose 12 pounds so far. I'm tracking calories better now.

I have been doing a wide variety of exercise: kettlebell, weights, cycle, running, yoga, and pilates. I did my 1st double digit run yesterday ~ 12 miles and I'm doing a half marathon in December (toying with the idea of doing the full. I have the time to train)

I've been told by others (NOT CATHEites! who know what a real woman can do ;)!) that combining P90X and Insanity is over-training and asking for injury. Yet, reading posts by other CATHEites, I see that many are combining her weights, even STS with INSANITY. I absolutely feel confident that I can safely do both.
Looking at the calendar, I do see a few tweaks I might make: ie. NOT doing both plyometric workouts on the same day! BUT, with P90x, my recovery week is coming at week 4, INSANITY comes at week 5. Also, one day of P90X is yoga and one day of INSANITY is cardio recovery. So while there might be one or two days a week that are tough, it doesn't seem like the whole week will stack that way.

I do think I will find the need to drop back on my weights at the Y, kettlebell, and maybe cycle.

What are your expert opinions? I feel much more confident in the knowledge level of y'all than the other board. In fact, I was quite discouraged by their posts, but am I being foolish? Are they correct?

Thanks so much for your help!

Becky

My opinion is, you won't know if you can do it unless you try it. Everyone is different when it comes to how much time it takes for them to recover for workouts and how much activity they can tolerate. I say go for it and see how you feel but be very mindful if you start sleeping poorly, are irritable, get overly hungry, moody, etc. These are all signs of overtraining. Sounds like you are an advanced exerciser anyway so its not like you are jumping into this without any experience. Please keep us posted on your results.

Hi Sandra,
I know what you mean about the rest day. I have a hard time taking one and I defiantely notice a difference in my attitude on that day. As far as working your legs with Insanity, i'm doing the 2nd month rotation b/c i got eager to start it and have just been doing 2 total body workouts per week. I keep the leg portion very light b/c my legs are getting lots of work from all the plyo work in insanity. I know a lot of people are doing just one heavy leg workout so again, you'll have to try it and see how you feel. I wouldn't want to completely max out a leg workout knowing that i have an insanity workout the next day b/c it would interfere with my leg recovery and i wouln't be able to give insanity 100%. However keep in mind too that your legs are getting lots of work through your spin classes so its hard to say how much weights you will want to add b/c of this. Not sure if this helps at all.

I forgot to say in my first post - I'm following the nutrition guide with this program, as well. I half followed it last week, but didn't fully commit to it until today. My reason for doing the program is to reduce my bodyfat. I've done P90X 3 times, and STS as-produced once. I want to focus on leaning out now. I'm doing STS again because it's just so effective.

Brenda - I missed your post earlier! Sorry about that! That's fantastic that you still pulled off a tough workout with a poor night's sleep. That's not easy to do!! And I'm buoyed by seeing that you're seeing some good changes! Knowing that will keep my hands out of the popcorn during family movie night tonight :D

Becky - Personally I feel that 2-3 hours of exercise every day is overtraining. While you may be able to do it, how well are you doing it? At what point do the inherent risks (joint deterioration) outweigh the benefits? Yes, professional athletes train at least that every day, but they retire from their sports at the ripe old age of 30 (they can make it to 40 in a few sports), and most often have long-term joint/health issues as they age. An excellent way to combine Insanity and P90X, IMO, is to do the Insanity cardio, and the P90X weight routines. Forget about PlyoX, KenpoX, and Core Synergistics, for now. And I wouldn't do them on the same day. I'd alternate them. Have you done P90X before? If you have, then you know best whether it's doable to do both. However, if you haven't, I'll share my experience. The yoga day is HARD. It is not easy yoga by any stretch of the imagination. It's also 90mins long. And you are a sweaty mess by the end. The weight work consists of a lot of full body moves like push ups (endless, endless push ups. STS doesn't compare...), and pull ups (endless, endless pull ups....). You burn a ton of calories with these workouts, and they're tiring. That's my experience. Just giving you something to think about. I think it's terrific that you can be so active!

Cheers,
Sandra

Hi Everyone,

I've been out of town and ate junk pretty much all weekend. I plan to get back on track tomorrow starting with the fit test first thing in the morning. I'm kind of excited about it because I want to see how much I have improved.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.:)

I'll let you know tomorrow. ;) I would not double up any other workout other then the fit test personally. That's more of Annette's gig. ;)

Becky, Welcome. If you can handle both STS and Insanity great. You may find you need to decrease the intensity of one or the other, or both, but if you have the time to dedicate and listen to your body good for you.

Personally I decided to commit all my efforts toward Insanity. I usually do weight work before cardio, but now I do it after with whatever I might have left for energy and not every day.
