Learning Step Moves

I did Bodymax yesterday and it was difficult because of all the challenging step footwork. I guess the best way to learn it is to do it over and over again. Is there a video out there somewhere that teaches you the mechanics of the moves slowly? It is a pain to constantly rewind. Also, re: the names of the particular move or combo you are doing, do specific instructors give these moves names or are they the same names across the board, ie. the same footwork by Cathe and Karen Voight would have the same name? Hope this post makes sense. How does the educated crowd out there learn the intricate footwork?

I can only answer for myself, but I seem to learn best by just jumping in and doing it until I get it. When I preview a new video I'll see the footwork, so in advance I know where it might get "sticky" for me, and when in doubt, I'll do the basic step (up,up, down, down) and watch the tv screen carefully that first time through, then try it when she repeats it. Sometimes I get it, sometimes not, but eventually, one day I do the video and my feet cooperate! :) Some videos take longer to master than others, but practice makes perfect, and I figure as long as I keep moving how wrong can I go!? :)
If you are just starting step in general, a very good basic step workout is Kelly Robert's Ultimate Step, which gives you a good foundation in basic step routines and turning on the step. If you are familiar with step, but new to Cathe step, I understand that her earlier step videos (Step Jam, Step Heat) are really good introduction to Cathe step videos.

I would also recommend starting with one of Cathe's earlier tapes, as Body Max is quite fast paced.

That's the only way I learned Cathe. I started w/ the Wedding Video, then moved onto Mega Step Blast, and now have just learned Step Heat. I think those three are her easiest to learn and the later tapes I've previewed include a lot of the step moves in those tapes.

Yes, I have done Cathe's earlier videos which are definitely easier. I think I probably need to stay with those for a while longer. Thanks for all your thoughts. Lisa
