leading leg for lunges?

Winter

Cathlete
Hello Cathe,

I was doing the 2nd blast in Low Max today - the lunge kicks on the step and was having trouble with which leg should be the leading leg -more so when pulsing for 7 or 15.

Hopefully I can explain what I mean here. Is the leading or driving leg supposed to be the front leg, back leg or both legs with the hips driving the movement. I was using the front leg on the step and it didn't feel like I was doing it correctly.

Maybe I should be asking which leg is supposed to benefit more from a lunge?

Thanks to anyone who responds.

Does it matter which leg is the leading leg if you are performing the move correctly?

The lunge works both legs hard. The leg on the step will burn probably in the quads and hamstrings, and it will work the glutes also as you dig gown into the front leg heel to bring the back leg back into alignment, but the leg going behind you burns also all along the front quads.

I know what you mean, Winter. When I do lunges, I'm never quite sure if I should try to divide the effort evenly over front and back leg. I find that my front quad feels like it is doing most of the work, so I try to get my back leg to take some of the weight so that more muscles benefit, and my front quad doesn't tire out so quickly. Not sure if this is correct though.
