Has it done any harm to your kidneys? Do you have any vitamin deficiencies from it? How do you get your calcium? Do you get constipated? Do you have type 2 diabetes?

Kidneys are great, no diabetes, I take a multivitamin plus calcium & fiber supplements (and my beloved oxypowder, but that's a topic for another thread. In fact, has been a topic in other threads :D).

Laura, How many calories a day do you eat with your plan? I looked at your sample menu and it looks pretty low so I was just curious if you know. I like the idea of what you are doing and would like to try it myself.

If you eat less than 20 grams of carbs a day it will put your body into ketosis, the same thing that happens in a complete fast except that you are still eating so your metabolism is running full speed. You lose the weight a lot quicker than a full fast because your body doesn't go into starvation mode.

Hoho, I'm not sure b/c I don't count cals. I would estimate them at maybe 1500 or so. The PB is the cal buster. :p

Dee is right about the ketosis. Dr. Atkins explains it very simply (perhaps TOO simply b/c I'd imagine there's more to it than this): your body has two sources of energy, carbs & fat. Your body burns carbs first, then fat. So if you're not taking in carbs, the only store of energy your body has to burn is fat.

Also, I think your statement about figuring out what works for you is key. I know we've said this many times here, but you have to experiment w/diets & find the one you can live with. It's not a temporary fix, it really is a lifestyle. I happen to like Atkins b/c I enjoy most of the foods on the diet, & I'm not hungry all the time. But that doesn't mean it's right for everyone.

You don't have to count calories on Atkins. You can eat a lot and you will still lose weight. You can eat as much bacon, hamburger, cheese, eggs, and so on, as long as you keep your body in ketosis you will burn fat and burn it fast. Being in ketosis lowers cholesterol even with all that bad fat. If you are not in ketosis on a high protein diet then it is important to watch the quantity and to eat lean meat, and also watching the fats. This is what I have learned from reading the Atkins book. I'm recommending that you read it if you want to do this kind of diet.
