Lady dies from H20 intoxication

That is unbelievable! Who knew you could get water intoxication? I see a HUGE lawsuit against that radio station, don't you?

Yes... I've heard of this. Actually someone died after runnning a marathon and taking in too much water a few years back. If I remember correctly, it causes brain swelling.

Yes, it is possibly to die from drinking too much water. It's called hypernutremia, and it happens when you drink so much water that it flushes out your body's sodium and electrolytes. When I was in the military, it happened to recruits in basic training a few times. It also happens to marathon runners.

I too smell a lawsuit. I haven't heard the term "water intoxication", but I certainly have heard of hyponatremia, where you overhydrate (and void through urination) to the point where you deplete your potassium stores, another condition that can have serious, even fatal consequences. Plus, I could easily see a person's bladder rupturing through overload.

This is appalling.

I stand corrected about depletion of potassium stores (I think) - I do remember sodium and electrolyte depletion, now that you mention it.

I too have heard that drinking too much water at one time can kill you. Can you imagine how, though, much you have to drink in order for it to be fatal!? YIKES! How scarey and sad.:-(

The first thing that came to my mind when I read this as well was a big ol' lawsuit against the radio station!!!

I've brought this up on this and other health boards and get flamed. A lot of fitness people push water very hard. You also need to drink electrolytic replacements if you're going to push fluids hard.

For dehydration they plug you into an IV for an hour or so. For water intoxification you get hospitalized and may die.

Instead of drinking 8 8's and adding from there for coffee etc, why not monitor the color of your urine, clear and copius.

I feel sorry for her children, there momma is gone.:-(.

I also hear this is popular in college. The freshmen do it to get in fraternities(spelling).

Amy:)

There was a college death related to this several years ago. Fraternity made pledges drink as much water possible. One of the pledges died. I can't believe a radio station didn't research this before pulling a stunt like this.

Sodium and potassium are both electrolytes (along with magnesium, manganese and some other minerals), so you both are right!

I've heard of this before, too. Too much of anything is not good. And it's very unhealthy to "hold it" when you have to go. I'm sure this didn't help, since urine is filled with toxins.

Is it too much to ask that people use common sense? I mean, the people at the radio station who thought this up and allowed this contest to go forward are stupid as is anyone who would participate in the contest. How ignorant can one get? I'm so sorry this happened and I feel for her family, but people have GOT to use their brains and think about things and use common sense before acting. I am appalled that this happened to this lady, horrified, but I'm just as appalled that an adult would take part in something like this (the same goes for hot dog eating contests and the like...bleh). My mouth just hangs open in shock...this just shouldn't have happened.

I would like to know this too. How do you know how much water is enough. I know I drink tons when I'm exercising, but only when I feel thirst.

I feel really bad for this woman and her family and the radio station was really STUPID for sponsoring a contest like this BUT when are people going to think for themselves and take responsibility for their actions? I'm sure there's going to be a huge lawsuit against the radio station and they were irresponsible, but people have to realize sometimes that they are responsible for what they do and you sometimes just need to say NO, I won't do this stupid thing.

that concerns me. i only drink water and green tea though the first ingredient is water. i like the diet lipton green tea with citrus. its either that or diet coke which i have stopped because i was drinking too much of it.now i am drinking alot of the green tea.sometimes a starbucks frap or protein drink
