KPC and low back soreness?

Hi Cathe!

I did KPC this weekend and LOVED it! The next day, my shoulders, core, low back, quads, and glutes were feeling the doms. I would expect all of the above, except for my low back. It is definitely a good muscle soreness, not a bad low back pain, but I am wondering if this is normal? Or, was I doing something wrong in my technique? Anybody else experience this or am I just a true wimp?

Thanks!!:)

Are you sure it's DOMS and not a muscle strain? Sometimes when doing kickboxing, if you try to kick too high (easy to do when the music is pumping and the instructor is motivating), you can excede the comfortable range of motion in your lower back. As far as DOMS, I have had it in my obliques and upper-to-mid back, but not in my lower back from kickboxing.

This may sound dumb, but what does DOMS stand for? I'm sure MS is probably muscle soreness, and I have some guesses on the D and O. I've seen it a lot, but just don't know for sure.

I've had soreness in my obliques and lats from kickboxing. I've previewed KPC but haven't done it yet. I can't wait, although I think I may have to start out with one of the shorter premixes. If Lorraine is making faces like that, I can't imagine how I could get through it all! I know when I can though, I'll be in the best shape of my life!

DOMS = "Delayed-onset muscle soreness" (it's the stuff you feel 24-to-48 hours after working out).

DOMS stands for "Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness." (You were right about the "muscle soreness" part:).)

I did KPC today and felt like a total clutz. I'm new to kickboxing (other than what's in BC and C&W) so this new technique will be quite a challenge for me. I'm going to modify and try to be a stickler for form. (I wish Cathe could see me to correct me.) I'm really glad she went over technique in the intro. That was very helpful.

Hi Kathryn,

thanks for your replies (and everyone else too!). I'm pretty sure it's not a strain. It just feels like good old muscle soreness, that's lessening as the day goes on. Maybe I was kicking too high. That workout really got me pumped (thanks Cathe!!). I'll have to watch it next time!

I have a similar soreness in my sides/mid to lower back. It is a "good" soreness though (did KPC first time yesterday afternoon) and I feel great. There's a lot of core and lower back work in KPC with all the back kicks, side twists and knee smashes... those'll get me every time. I also feel it in my arms, upper back, hamstrings, glutes oh you NAME it I feel it! I love it though - I know that I really shook things up and challenged myself. This is a great workout - it does a body good! :)

Coming back in to add that I trained in Tang Soo Do (Korean martial art) for 2 years and I remember feeling the same kind of soreness in my muscles after a good solid class... I don't think it's something to be worried about (like a strain) as long as you can still move around and are not doubled up in pain of course!

I just woke up (did KPC yesterday), and now I, too, feel a little lower back soreness. I was thinking, maybe it was the ab work?

You know, I used to be a ballet dancer and this soreness feels the same as a good ballet class as well, like after having to hold arabesque for days!! It should definitely do my body some good!

Thanks for the replies on DOMS. I'm certainly familiar with how it feels, even if I wasn't familiar with the technical name!

I did just the Kick and Punch premix this morning. I also felt like a clutz, getting my punches mixed up, and especially with the two sidekicks. I think it will just take some practice. I think for the next week or so, I may just do the various KPC premixes for my cardio. It will have variety, and it will also allow me to start getting the moves down, so I can really work it.

By the way, no soreness yet, but it's only been 4 1/2 hours since I finished. I'm sure I'll feel differently tomorrow morning!

Another Susan here who did KPC (why do I think of fried chicken when I type that?) last night and is sore throughout her back today.

My abs are also totally fried, I thought my innards would fall out through my belly button this morning!

Takin' it REAL easy today...

Hi Absinthekitty! I'm getting here late but it sounds to me that you are feeling better now and have determined that this soreness is most likely DOMS and not an injury. The good news is that you will probably never get THAT sore again and just experience normal soreness from here on out. Have "fun":)

Thanks Cathe!! Can't wait to do it again!! }(

Also just wanted to thank you for your awesome workouts! This new series is GREAT!!!! You never disappoint!!

After finally getting to view KPC, I think one of the culprits for LOWER back DOMS is the hammer punches, where you have to keep your lower back in an isometric contraction to hold a good position (and if one doesn't support their back in good posture while doing these, it could cause more than just DOMS, but be bad for the lower back).

I've been splitting up KPC into the premixes. Tuesday, I did the kicking and punching premix, and yesterday I did the cardio conditioning premix, which has a lot of back kicks, as well as the hammer punches.

I have to say that I'm surprised that I had relatively little soreness after either day. The one part of me that is pretty sore today though, is my lower back. I was thinking it was from the back kicks, but possibly also the hammer punches.

I've been splitting up the workout mainly because of limited time to workout during the week, but also because when I previewed it, I didn't think I'd be able to do anything more after the high intensity cardio section. I was pleasantly surprised yesterday after doing just the cardio. While it was very intense, I know I could have done more, and I think I may just try the whole thing this weekend.
