Knee Pain During Side Crunches...etc

A previous poster had shoulder problems on this one. My abs and upper body are fine on these exercises. I find that on both the lying on the side and arching up or reaching down toward the mat, my lower knee is very unhappy.

I'm thinking of going with the heavier weight and working with my knees on the mat. It's seems a bit wimpy - but I'm going to have to do that to make my knees happy.

Another issue, I tend to want to hold my legs up in the air a bit when doing the Russian Twist sort of oblique exercise. In part, I feel better counter balanced, but also I have done this this way in the past so habit is a factor too. Any problems with this?
