Knee pain associated with raised step?

I raised my step height from 4" to 6" and felt great doing so. Then, by the end of my second workout at the 6" height my right knee was hurting. Since then, it's been giving me problems off and on. Today, out of sheer frustration coupled with denial, I lowered the height. Three guesses what the result was...yep, knee pain decreased significantly. It's only a two inch change. Why would that make such a huge difference and is there ANY hope of being able to go to 6"? I'm frustrated at this unforeseen complication. (I equate increased height to helping shape and tone my legs a bit more...maybe that's a misconception on my part.)

Two inches makes a great deal of difference for me also, but in my left ankle and my feet. Once I dropped down to 4 inches, I was much better off. Maybe some of the others will have solutions but I just took it as my body trying to tell me something and moved on.

I finally gave up about a year ago. Sometimes I only do 4" step. I also only do about 8-10" for tall box work and I'm 5'5" with long legs, but anything higher than that kills my knee. I have found that I'm getting as good if not better results, also because now I don't haev to take weeks off from over doing it :)
