knee injury - kneecap

NY25

Cathlete
Has anyone ever cracked their kneecap or severly bruised it? I fell five weeks ago right onto my kneecap and it still hurts. There is still a very subtle bruise, I can't kneel on it and I just tried LBB and can't do any of the single leg exercises on that leg without pain. Five weeks just doesn't seem reasonable and is starting to tick me off. Anyone have any experience in this space?

Yeah, about 5 years ago while hiking in Montana, I slipped on rocks in the Beartooth mountains and whacked my kneecap directly into the surface of the rock with my full body weight behind it. It was so bad I went to get checked out at local hospital. It hurt like hell and then still hurt in a lingering way for some weeks after but it did gradually go away. Bad bruises to the kneecap just take their time.

Sorry that this probably isn't what you want to hear but pain is the body's way of telling us not to do something, right?

Just a matter of time... best of luck,

Clare

I've both bruised and fractured mine, at different times. The bruising actually hurt more, and lasted longer. It was a deep, deep pain, and I let it go on too long before I saw a Dr. Ended up with an MRI and all but the very outer edges of my kneecap were one massive bruise. That took months to go away completely.

When I fractured it, that was a sharp, nasty, breath stealing pain, but it only lasted 30 seconds or so (felt like forever at the time) then it only hurt if I kneeled on it or did too much impact, again a sharp, sharp pain. That healed up in a couple weeks, but I ended up with it in immobilizing brace to keep it from being aggravated. An immobilizer in August sucks- hot! At the time, my kneecap wasn't tracking straight, so every time it would move, it would put more stress on the fracture, especially with quick movements. so I was all strapped up for 4 or 6 weeks - I really can't recall the time frame.

Give it time and rest.

Thanks, ladies! This is helpful. Haven't gone to the doc yet, but may just to check it out. I did Chest and Tris today, and have to do pushups from just one knee (bonus), because I couldn't put weight on the other knee that way. I may get it checked just to find out what the deal is. Thanks.

Yes, do that because then when the doc tells you there is no structural damage it will be a huge relief and you can then decide whether you want to try some workouts and push through discomfort knowing that you can't make it worse and won't end up even more injured than before, which is always the worry, right?

I'm not advocating being stupid here and going full throttle but when I had hip pain since this Jan, it helped to know from MRI that there was no structural damage so that I didn't need to baby myself. I could work out, but I still needed to dial it down a bit, i.e., I couldn't run (which was what I most wanted to do but which aggravates the pain more than anything) but I could powerwalk, step and do strength training.

So, get checked out and if you get the "OK, it's just bruised" you can gradually start to work out what you can do each week and expect more of yourself....gradually being the operative word, right?

Good luck!
