Kettlebells

Good Morning, :)

Last night, I went to Wal Mart to purchase Kettlebells and they were all gone:( I should have brought them when I seen em:( Any who, where would be the best and cheapest places to order a few. Thank you!

I have discussed this very thing with a personal trainer. She said the GoFit Kettlebells sold at Target are the best from the stores. Other than that, you will have to order them from the internet where I found them to be really expensive!

Ladies, Thank You! :)

Dally’s I didn’t know play it again sam was right in my back door. There’s one in Macedonia Commons Blvd, about 7 to 10 minutes away and Mayfield Road.

Mayfield have them 34.99 for 18g I think that's what he said. Also, going to check out Targets.

The Play it again sports in my area carry the Apollo brand. That is the brand that Lauren Brooke likes too.:) Good luck in finding some. I heard the wall-mart kind have an uncomfortable handle.

Dallys: Hm…did not know that about Wal-Mart Kettlebells. As soon as I get off work I am heading straight to PIAS on Mayfield. I guess a 18lber would be good to start with:)

For what it's worth, I posted a review of several different brand kettlebells that I own and have tried on my blog last year. It's strictly my own opinion, but I've used lots of different brands of bells and thought some might find it informative.

My favorite brands are Dragon Door, Ader, and Lifeline.
I stay away from the kettlebells sold in the stores (GoFit) and brands like Gill Athletics or PowerMax simply because they are not well constructed. The handles tend to be lumpy and non-uniform, and somewhat on the thick side. Handle thickness is somewhat a personal perference. At any rate, take my opinion for what it may be worth :) If you're able, I'd suggest trying out different KBs by visiting a gym that uses them (many Crossfit affiliates carry kettlebells) and don't be afraid to try them out in the store. As someone mentioned, check your local Play it Again sports, as well as craigslist. My local PIAS sells Muscle Driver kettlebells; not my favorite brand, but not too bad.

good luck!!!

I have Perform Better kettlebells and also have a couple Gofit from Target. The GoFit are actually very nice.

I got my GoFit's from Target and have no issues with quality or anything else.

Now, about banging the d*mn thing into my forearm when doing cleans... THAT I have a problem with.

I have GoFit, Ader and Perform Better KB's, and I've tried Dragon Door.
I've also seen KB's in Walmart.

Of those, I prefer the Ader and GoFit. With GoFit, the handles can vary in smoothness, so it's best to get them in person (at Target--for up to 20#? or Dick's, for example).
Aders are a bit more compact for their size.
I don't really like the Perform Better's: the handles are a bit thicker or rougher (not 'snaggy' rough, more like 'matte' rather than 'slick'), and not as comfortable for me.
Dragon Doors are also nice (but pricey).

As I already mentioned, the Walmart ones do not interest me at all. The handles look 'lumpy,' almost as if molded by hand.

Have you tried wearing wristbands? I wear simple tennis wristbands, and that helps a lot. Still, you shouldn't be banging your arm when you do cleans or snatches. Check out the Art of Strength (AOS) website; they have tutorials about how to do them so that you're not smashing your wrist. Also do a search on YouTube. There's a surprising amount of good (and bad) kettlebell info available on YouTube.

It's a tricky move (sort of a pivot with your wrist), but once you get it down, it really helps protect your wrists.

As for brand of kettlebells, I really like the Perform Better vinyl coated kettlebells. They have smooth handles and a rubber disc on the bottom for extra floor protection (and so they don't fall over as easily).

Good luck!

I have GoFit KB, mainly because I had $40 in coupons for Dick's and I didn't have to pay shipping. But I totally agree with Kathryn. You have to buy them in person and check the handles, you can't just pick the first one off the shelf. The thickness of the handles varied so much and a couple were rough.

I have the same problem with doing cleans. Thanks everyone for the links! I actually went to a fabric store a few days ago and bought a piece of foam rubber and some stretchy material to make my own wrist bands. Just haven't gotten in gear and made them yet.

BUT - do you think this exercise is really accomplishing any more than the rest of the exercises? It wouldn't break my heart to skip 'em!

Yes. :) The clean is one of those foundational exercises. It helps the body learn how to generate power from the hip, and can be used for strength as well as endurance...while bruising the forearms. ;):)
