Kettlebells in Fitness RX

In this months Fitness mag there is a great article on kettlebells. It explains in great detail why it is better than other types of wo's. So for anybody on the fence about it this might be the push that might convert you.

I saw this article too and it did push me over the last threshold (along with all of the chatter that's been going on here). I bought a DVD and a KB!

Now I'm sporting 2 bruised wrists and will soon be signing up for a few (or more) sessions at a RKC school here. I'm not nearly as graceful, flexible or skilled as I thought I was , and I don't want to hurt myself.

I'm so excited though - I can hardly wait to get started! I've been needing a shot of enthusiasm and this is doing it.

Ooh, I haven't read it yet, but I have also jumped on the kettlebell bandwagon. But alas, I have been sick for the last few days, so I haven't been able to try it yet!! It has been silently mocking me in the corner of the living room for days. AARGH!!!

On the bandwagon

I couldn't stand the temptation after reading the threads on here.

My concern is that I keep reading that it's great to start with a couple of classes or a PT session to learn proper form.

I live in Mexico and I'm pretty sure I bought the only kettlebell in the country (an American one froom Mexico's version of eBay). I'm very doubtful I could find someone to give me lessons on how to use it.

Has anyone come across a really good instructional site or video that I could use to teach myself great form?

I do lift regularly and am a former ballerina, so I'm pretty good on muscle control. Just reading some comments on here have made me a little weary :) Any suggestions much appreciated!

Girl, let me tell you something. I got a basic kettlebell dvd from Target and was so unimpressed with the workout when I did it four days ago. You'd do one set of an exercise, then rest for 30 seconds, do a set of a second exercise, rest for 30... It got to where I was fast-forwarding because there was such a ridiculous amount of down time. Then I upgraded to a heavier kettlebell because I didn't feel I was accomplishing anything.

Fast-forward to this morning: Just like yesterday morning and the morning before, I STILL can barely walk.

I'm just saying.

I have not taken any classes either but did purchases Mike Mahler's DVD and it is VERY VERY detailed. Far more instruction than Sara Lurie or Lauren Brooks. It is long, but so worth it and the instruction is outstanding. He does make a few comments that are so unecessary, specifically innuendoes about men in San Francisco and other remarks. Nothing over the top but less than professional, not alot of comments but enough to where if this was a daily workout dvd I would not be able to stand it. I have been doing kettlebells for almost 2 weeks and have absolutely no bruised wrists and no soreness and I use very strict form. I think the MM dvd ran roughly $40.00 but worth every penny as I can review it over and over to remind me to use good form.

I did purchases the GoFit kb's at target and did not bother with the dvd that came with it. Sara Lurie has two other dvd's that can be purchased separately and they are pretty good. If you are on the west coast USA kettlebells has great prices on the Ader kb's and their shipping is dirt cheap! I ordered a 15# & 18# and shipping for them was only $17.00 and the kb prices are great. I prefer the Ader kb's to GoFit and GF handles are not always smooth. If you buy two or more Aders, even with shipping they are still cheaper than GF.

I guess who and how you start doing the kettlebell exercises are important. I started with veiwing Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel and that got me excited over kettlebell. Then I got The Kettlebell My Way and Providence and they are great dvds. We also have a group of guys who are very well versed in weight training and they are also interested in kettlebell. They taught me that knowing the proper deadlift technique is so important as the movement of the hip when doing swing is exactly like doing the deadlift. Once you get that right, you find that the power is generated from the hip and never from the arms or wrist for the swing.

Now I am waiting for the The Official Kettlebell Foundation DVDs from RMAX International
(http://www.rmaxinternational.com/KBF/) which includes mobility and breathing methods in kettlebell exercises.

A good start is always important in any exercise.
