Kettlebell questions

This is the one thing I've yet to try but I want to because you all rave about it so much. What are the best kettlebell workouts for someone who weight trains but has never trained with kettlebells? I want one or two workouts that I can use now but continue to use as I can handle more. Ideas?

I purchased, and really like, Lauren Brooks' DVD. You can check it out here. It's got very good instruction on how to do each exercise, and two good routines. One is 12 minutes and the other is around 40. It might seem easy at first, but it gets pretty challenging pretty fast.

The other series that seems pretty popular are "The Kettlebell Way" and "The Art of Strength". "Art of Strength-Providence" is sort of the "beginner" DVD from AOS, and evidently it's very similar to "The Kettlebell Way". The primary instructor on "Providence" and "TKBW" is Anthony DiLuglio, and in TKBW features a female instructor as well, plus extra form pointers and whatnot. So, that might be a good choice. You can buy it here.

Under NO circumstances should you order a DVD called "The Kettlebell Goddess Workout" unless you consider staring at the TV in bafflement to be good exercise. If that describes you, let me know and I'll send you mine. Sheesh, what a terrible DVD.

The ones that Lisa gave you are all great, and, once you get more used to the moves, you might also want to check this one with Keith Weber out:

It seems to be a fave around here, and it's really hard -- but fun! :D

ETA: Art of Strength's Newport workout is also one of my personal faves! Anthony is great!

Holy COOOOWWWW!

What great recommendations. I am so ready to join this club.

Isn't STS going to feature kettlebell, also?

No, I don't think it is. :( Awhile back, someone posted something on the Ask Cathe or STS forum, asking for ideas on how to integrate KB workouts in with STS, but there was never any response. I'd love to keep at least one KB workout a week while doing STS since I love them and am getting great results, but am not sure if it would be the best thing to do . . . .

Leanne - I know of at least a few of trainers for different sports that include kettlebell work along their regular training and sport specific stuff. The opinion is that KB training is a nice complement to lots of other things. Based on the stuff I've read, I'd bet that you'll be fine doing it along with STS. Besides...they're too much fun to give up! :)

Thanks for posting this question, my SO was just asking what I wanted for my birthday and I think I'm ready to join the club, too, sounds like fun. Now to choose which one to start with. :D

JOIN THE CLUB!!! You'll love it! Just as a heads-up, some of the workouts use two kettlebells - I know Steve Cotter uses two for some things, and AOS Firepower uses two. My SO started doing KB workouts with me using a dumbbell and it worked fine to start with.

Thanks, Gayle, for that great advice! Do you think it would be alright to add in one extra day of KB stuff during STS?:)

Will you darned people pleeeaaassseeee quit talking about kettlebells!! Good grief...I am TRYING to avoid yet another addition to my workout stuff  Aside from the fact that my job requires me to use my brains sometimes and I fear that using KBs will result in said brains spilling onto the floor due to my incredible lack of coordination! At the very least, seems I would break something like my wrist. Now just stop all further conversations about kettlebells because I am feeling the slightest little tug of temptation...:p

Oh Shana Banana, did you know that I'm a kettlebell pusher, too LOL! LOL! LOL! You need some kettlebells. I'm serious. You NEED them. I LOVE Anthony. I desperately want to be locked in a gym with him and Sean -- the S & T workout! Ooh! :D

Ask yourself this -- have I ever steered you wrong? Hmmmmmmm?

STS is just three days a week, right? I would think adding an extra day would be worth trying, as long as you feel good and aren't showing any signs of overtraining.

Ohhhh, cruel Michele, cruel!! :D Ummm, no, you have indeed never steered me wrong and you do have impeccable taste in men; if this Anthony is anything like Sean, well then, I may have to re-evaluate my need for kettlebells (CCKB PUSHER!) ;)

Shana Banana (intentionally ignoring your demand that we cease & desist), don't worry about the coordination thing. I was born w/2 left feet, it usually takes me months (Power Max) or years (Rhythmic Step, ACS2 & 3) to get complex choreo. I'm relatively new to KBs, maybe 3-4 months, & I've only dropped once onto my basement floor (fortunately no small dogs were in the way ). I have yet to (unintentionally) harm myself.

Michelle, Anthony is totally hot, but Steve Cotter's abs make me weak in the knees. You could do a week's worth of laundry on those abs. ;)

Thanks, Gayle! I've been worried about this, so I really appreciate your input! :)

Shana, drink the Kool-Aid! ;) Seriously, the kettlebell workouts are soooo much fun!! Yeah, they're expensive, but they really give great results! I'm actually getting some definition in my abs, which I've never had before!

Yes, ShanaBanana, there is no point in trying to resist. There's something really special about the unique form of a$$-kicking that is kettlebells. It's fun and it makes your abs incredibly fierce. And yes, Anthony is very cute with his little Rhode Island accent!

LauraMax recently enabled me (perhaps without realizing it) to buy the Steve Cotter DVDs...haven't tried'em yet, though...

I got Providence last week and did it twice. I love it soooooooo much! My inner thighs could really feel it like nothing else. And you're going to be so jealous....Newport just arrived today. I can't wait to watch it tonight. I'll be having a date with Anthony tomorrow morning. A real date. Ha Ha. I am so Pyched!!!!!:rolleyes::p:D
