Kettlebell DVD questions

Cathlete
Hi, gals,

I went out to Target and bought 3 kettlebells: 10lb, 15lb and 20lb. I tried this AM followed the dvd came with kettlebell. Kathryn was right, 10lbs is easy for me. But I did get my heart rate up. I did not have a full length workout dvd. So I am sure that if I did fowllow one, I would have sweat even with 10lb. Also, this was my first kettlebell work out, I spent time to learn the posture. I don't want it too heavy.

Now, I had kettlebells. I need dvds. I went to AOS Provice site: http://www.artofstrength.com/dvdworkout/tabid/182/Default.aspx
Which one should I order? It is so expensive. $49 for the New AOS Province. Is it the one you guys ordered?

When I shopped in Target yesterday, I also saw there was Iron Core by Sarah Lurie vol one on sale for 10.49. Is it a good one to start? I can follow up with all moves she showed on the dvd came with kettlebell.

Also, anyone find any presale or sale sites for kettlebell related workout dvds?

Thanks

I don't have any of the Iron Core DVD's so I can't comment to that, but I will say I love Lauren Brooks' DVD http://www.socaltrainer.com/. It's 39.99, so it's a bit cheaper that AOS and a very good value. I don't have Providence, but I have Kettlebell Way Vol 1, which is Providence re-done with Beth Chamberlain. It's a good tough workout, but I tend to reach for Lauren's DVD more when I do kettlebells.

Best of luck to you on your new Kettlebell journey! :)

Thanks, ninjamom and beccajanern. I am going to order Lauren Brook one. AOS Province is too pricy for me now. I just got 3 kettlebells. I need to give my DH a period of time to absorb my fitness shopping flee.:p

Question, can you do kettlebell workout everyday? Like 20-30min?

Thanks

I really like Lauren's DVD and it's a good starting point too!! I would give myself a day between workouts for recovery. As you get used to kbs you may be able to do some of the moves everyday, but I would see how your body reacts first JMO ;)

WantFit - one thing I have learned is that in order to have proper form on some of the KB moves, you must go heavy. Anthony has a video addressing that. If you go too light, your back will sway in the swings and your hamstrings lose out. Go heavier and the emphasis is in your hamstrings and you perform the move correctly. I don't remember where on the site I saw that or I would post the link. I have to use 10lbs for moves where my shoulder gets most of the emphasis but 20 lbs is too light for me for swings so I am ordering heavier KBs. I have tried one of those Iron Core DVDs - well, previewed it - and it is night and day different from AOS.

ITA! I took some private sessions with an instructor and was told the same thing. I don't use anything less than my 12kg (26.4 lbs) for swings otherwise I cheat and my form suffers.

However, you will be happy to have a 10lber when you start Turkish Get Ups:eek:

Catherin,
Thanks for your headup.;) I did not feel much impact today. Of course, one it is too light, 10lb. I will keep it for my DD. 2nd, I did not do the full workout, just followed the instruction DVD.

Meowracer,
I took your advice to forgo Iron Core. When I did google serch I found found this site
http://store.beacon-fitness.com/servlet/-strse-Holiday-Specials/Categories?sfs=c6db36e2
have AOS on sale. I ordered "Kettlebell way Vol 1 and 2" since it is on sale for $84.95 with free shipping. I can't wait for the dvds to come.

I tried Turkish Get Up this AM. 10lbs did not feel too much for me. I definitely will go heavier next time.

Another question,

If I am doing kettlebell, will it able to replace aerobic training like elliptical or treadmil? Will it give enough aerobic endurance training?

Thanks

I do have a little uncomfort while doing military press. When I swing to the front chest position, it kind of pounding my write. Did I do it right? How can I reduce the impact of pounding?

Thanks

Marcy,

Thanks for your tip. Now you make me wanting to order it. With 10% off, even including shipping fee, it would be just $36.48. Ha, I can see my DH face turning green.:p

To keep from banging your wrists, there are several ways of looking at the move:
1) Sarah Lurie cues to think of the hand movement as pulling up a zipper on a coat, this 'tames the arc' of the move and keeps the bell closer to your body.
2)Mike Mahler says to think of the clean as somewhat of an upper cut move. You move your hand around the bell, rather than allowing it to bang your wrist.

I think it's easiest to go by video instruction, though, so you can see what 's going on.

On www.artofstrength.com there are some videos showing different moves.

Look up 'kettlebell clean' on www.youtube.com to find some tutorials.

While you're learning, it's a good idea to get some tennis wrist bands (I got some nice thick, long ones at Walmart) to cushion your forearm/wrist. I wear these whenever I do KB upper body moves, because even if I don't bang my wrists, the weight of the bell on my boney wrists is uncomfortable.

HTH!

Marcy,

I did breakdown and used your coupon code to order Lauren's dvd. With regular USPS shipping and insurance, it came just under $33.

Kathryn,

Thanks for your tips. I will try it tonight. After I read your writings in other threads, yesterday when I was in Target, I also bought a pair of tennis wrist band. At first, I am really not sure what to use it. Now I really know what it is for.:D Thanks. I almost tried to return it.

WantFit: Congratulations on your purchase! I just ordered Lauren's DVD myself.

Kathryn: After all your posts raving about this one, I just had to get it. Thanks for enabling:rolleyes::)

Hope you like it, Marcy.
I really like the 14-minute (plus joint mobility makes it about 20 minutes total) workout. Very time efficient, but hits pretty much everything.
