Kefir

Is kefir basically just yogurt that hasn't been cultured as long so it's not as firm? If not, what is the difference between kefir and yogurt?

Thanks,

They are made with different cultures (different types of good bacteria).

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Can I make my own kefir using kefir as a culture, then? I just tried it and I really like it . . . but I really don't want to pay $4.00 a quart!

Yes, you can. My stepmother just recently started making it.

You have to buy what are called "kefir grains" (they come in a package with instructions.

I'm sure you can also find recipes online. Someone on Etsy sells kefir-making kits (using either milk or water and spices). I was thinking of getting the water kefir kit myself at some point.

I'll be looking into it. Thanks, Kathryn for the great info--as always.
