Just when I thought I knew what I was doing...

I don't think this study is that earth shattering. They studied moderate level, steady state exercise (400 cal per hour) and expected the subjects' metabolism to stay at an accelerated level the next day???
They then "discovered" that you can't out-exercise a bad diet.

Isn't this covered already in 10,000 articles/books/previous studies which is why HIIT and weight training are recommended. And, why diet is 80% of the issue for weight loss?

Who are these researchers that their results shocked them??

I am with you!!!! Every single day I read something that totally contradicts what I read the day before.:eek::eek::eek:

I'm so confused some times I find myself just wanting to scream. I read the other day that we are born with a certain number and size of fat cells. And there is nothing we can do about it. They did a study of women who had liposuction on their belly. And they found that the fat came back in their hips and thighs!!!!!!!!!!!!

For right now, I am just going to concentrate on eating as healthy as I can, working out for my cardio health and toning up. And I am NOT reading anything else!!!!!

I agree, that article's lame. Of course low intensity steady state cardio doesn't have much of an EPOC effect- whoever said it did? HIIT and heavy weight training have an EPOC effect.

And that's what I do! I think, like Ellie, I am going to stop reading every article that comes out and stick to what works.

I think the article is more true than not true, but confusing and misleading in how it says it. I don't expect that if I do and exercise (HIIT or a long bike ride or run, weight lifting) that my metabolism is revved the rest of the day so I can have a free for all with my eating. I don't think any of us believe that we can eat what ever we want because we worked out in the morning. Diet is as important, if not more important, than exercise for losing weight. Reading this article reminded me of the signature line of one of our Catheites (I believe it's Pinky, but it may be Sarah) - "You can exercises until the cows come home, but if you don't control your diet, you will still be cow coming home" (something like that - but you get the idea).

That's Charlotte's (toastythemosty I think?) quote. :) And yes, I agree that it is VERY true! You might be able to slow down the weight gain with exercise and a bad diet but you can not combat the ultimate outcome with exercise alone.....unless perhaps you exercise ALL OF THE TIME! That is..when you aren't eating! LOL :p

Though I believed the thing about burning calories for up to 24 hours after working out, I knew that if I ate more or the same as I burned I would either gain weight or stay the same. It wasn't until I started journaling almost every morsel, that I started to lose weight consistently.

Interesting article.

Great. Another "news" article guaranteed to make all the sofa spuds reach for another Cheeto while watching tv because nothing they do matters... Lord, everyone should know by now that saying "You can't work out a bad diet." And does anyone still not know that diet is at least 80% of the physique equation?

These news organizations need to be taken to task for making the obesity epidemic worse with what, for them, are nothing but filler stories.
