Just Got Engaged!

Hi Cathe and All Friends-in-Fitness!

My sweet boyfriend shocked me yesterday with his marriage proposal! Of course I said "YES!" We would like to get married the last weekend of October (if we can organize the wedding that quickly).

For our wedding, I would like to be at the same weight and size that I was when we met five years ago. I felt the best then about myself and thought I looked good in my clothes. So, what is the best way for me to get there?

Here are my stats: When we met, I was 140 lbs., 5'6", and my bodyfat was about 22%. Now I 153 lbs, and the last time my sister checked my bodyfat in November it was about 28%.

As you might remember, I had gained a lot of weight during 3 years in law school and started exercising again last January, when I was at 168 lbs. and 32% bodyfat. Now I have been at my current weight for about 4 months--I guess that qualifies as a plateau that I want to break.

My most recent 6-week rotation was the PS series one time per week, Circuit Max once per week, and 2.5 - 3 additional hours of mixed cardio (including mostly running/walking, step, and kickboxing). I decided last week would be my last week with that rotation, although I was still seeing results and was still sore after each workout (just needed a change).

This morning would normally have been my PS LA morning, but I did MIC instead, thinking I need to increase my cardio to get the weight off. I was thinking of doing another 6-week rotation including MIC once a week, MIS once a week, I-Max (!@#$%^&*) once a week, Power Hour once a week, and running with my dog. But I would appreciate some feedback on that.

My eating is okay, but could be better. I don't like junk food too much, except I am a stress eater of chocolate and candy while at work. I have been trying to cut back on that and replace it with nuts/raisins and more nutritious snacks.

Sorry this was so long winded, but as you can probably tell, I am excited, and want to look and feel my best for our wedding day! What do you suggest?

Thanks so much for your attention!

Linda

Congratulations! I know that with alll the cardio you're planning on doing, you might be too tired to concentrate on lifting. Muscle loss is not a good thing when you're trying to get lean. I am not the best with rotations so I'll wait for someone else to offer their two cents. But when I was getting married, here's what I did:
A long cardio session Mon
Upperbody and a short cardio session (20 min or so) on Tues
Lower body with short cardio session on Wed
Upperbody and a short cardio session on Thurs
Long cardio on Fri
Lower body and a shorter cardio session on Sat
Rest on Sun
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ROTATION
I lost lots of weight, but had zero energy, thought about food all of the time, and had insomnia yet I was constantly tired. This time around, I would eliminate the cardio on days I did weight work and would only do the split weights once a week, and a total body tape, like Power Hour or MIS once a week, so that I was still hitting each body part twice, but I wouldn't be so tired! But everyone is different. Hope this helped. One more thing, if you do eat some candy or chocolate, eat some nuts or yogurt with it, so that you are taking in protein with the carbs. But don't worry - you'll look great! You're husband-to-be obviously thinks so! I am so happy for you!

Jillybean,

Thank you for your input. I agree that I definitely don't want to lose the muscle mass I just put on over the last 6 weeks with the PS Series. I'm wondering if Power Hour and MIS will allow me to maintain my muscles until I can get mentally prepared for a three-week SH rotation. Right now I need a break from the 3-day split style.

I will re-think the cardio I had planned. I'd love to hear if Cathe thinks it will be too much. I've never had a problem with cardio causing me to lose much muscle mass as long as I kept lifting each body part two times per week. (except that running does prevent my legs from bulking up, no matter how heavy I go with legs).

Oh, I also went to the grocery store to buy some more mixed nuts and some yogurt in case I get a chocolate attack! Thanks for the suggestion!

hi linda. congratulations on your engagement. i thinkyou will have plenty of time to reach your goals in time for your wedding day. this is my 2 cents: strenth training. before logging on today i was reading some of my other emails from different sites and one in particular stuck with me as i read your post. everything lately i have been reading lately has defineitely been focused on how strength training is really a major component of weight loss and also doing strength first before cardio because you willburn glycogen first during strength and then fat later during cardio. i am sure yo will get tons of great feedback from the others with more advice. one last thing--- a clean diet really does do wonders, too. good luck!

Congratulations!!!!! I have been on numerous "Diets" in my day, and what I always go back to, and started again today, is Weight Watcher's. It is a lifestyle plan you can live wuth. They teach you how to enjoy your treats, but watch your weight. You can even sign up online. It is a good food program. I am sure no matter what, you will look gorgeous on your wedding day. I am happy for you.

Hi Linda! Congratulations on your engagement. How exciting. We planned our wedding in 6 month time frame and found that to be the perfect amount of time to get all the things done that we needed too. Happy Planning!

Your rotation sounds fine. If I am reading it correctly, you are doing two strength workouts per week and three cardio workouts per week. Thats five workouts with two days off per week. That combined with a clean diet will definitely get you to your goals. Side Note: Nuts and raisins are a healthy snack but be sure to enjoy them in moderation.

You have around 7 months to lose 13 pounds and that is a very realistic goal. Be sure to do other rotations every so often (you seem to like to change every 6 weeks, thats fine) up until about a week before your big day. At that point you will most likely be so busy wrapping up the last minute details before your wedding day that you will not have time to work out.
Enjoy!

Cathe,

Thank you for your response! I appreciate it! I will be sure to eat healthy snacks in moderation and to continue changing my rotations. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks we can plan our wedding in 6 months. It's nice to know someone else did it too!

Also, thanks to all who responded with words of wisdom. I will be sure to take all suggestions into consideration. This forum is really great!

Hi Linda,

Congratulations!!! :-jumpy I just wanted to jump in and say that I am so happy for you and wish you and your fiancee all the best. I too planned my wedding in 6 months and thought that it was just exactly the right amount of time. Enjoy every minute of the planning. It is such a wonderful fun time.

How are your wrists holding up by the way? I always appreciated your advice and support from last year when I had my surgery. I hope you are pain free!

Keep us posted on your progress as your big day approaches.:)

Congratulations, Linda! I just recently got married (on Feb. 2) and found myself in the situation of having to lose a lot of weight in 8 weeks due to gaining weight in the 8 months that I hadn't tried my dress on. I will refrain from suggesting you do what I did though, because I purposely tried to lose muscle in my upper body and did lots of cardio. I completely eliminated weight work in the upper body for several weeks. I also had to eat very clean, more so than I could maintain over the long term. It worked and I lost 16 pounds in 8 weeks, but now I am in the process of putting it back on! I would take the advice of the others on this board since you have more time and can probably do things more sanely than I did.

Good luck with your planning, and take some time to enjoy your engagement and the process. I know how crazy it can be, and I had over twice the amount of time you did to plan (13 months...probably too much time!).

Thanks for all of your responses and congratulations! It looks like we may be on for October 12! I tentatively reserved a beautiful estate in the country for the reception and we are going to look it this weekend!

Allison,
My right wrist (surgery wrist) is very good. My left wrist bothers me due to tendonitis and a small ganglion. I am not considering surgery at this time, but may in the future if it gets worse. For now, I just don't do any pushups, dips, or anything that stresses my wrists in any way.

How is your surgery wrist? I hope you had a full recovery!
