Just for fun: Unusual Hobbies/Interests???

Liann

Cathlete
So, I'm curious as to what unusual, off the wall interests some of our posters might have.

I'll start - If you met me, which some of you will soon at the Road Trip, you would NEVER guess what my hobby is - Herpetology. I actually go to shows/conventions and some day I would like to do educational programs for kids. So, anyone else have any unusual, interesting hobbies/past times?

Here's a few pictures of my babies (WARNING: If scales freak you out, do not continue...):

Liann, are these guys really yours? Cool.

I'm a bird and wildflower gal. I love seeing new species to add to my life list. I loved traveling to WA and seeing all the new flowers.

Oh, Liann, do you own all those guys? That's so fascinating!

I have no strange or unusual hobbies or interests. I garden, I read, I workout, I scrapbook... pretty mundane.

Believe it or not, they are all mine. And that's just a sampling. The last animal is a female ball python who just laid those eggs last Wednesday.

I like the 2nd one and the red and black one. They look pretty aweseom. Just don't bring them on the RT ok? I can handle looking at them but don't want to get anywhere near them. :)

My weird / dorky hobby is reading fantasy books. I love any book with dragons, elves, dwarves and wizards. I also love fantasy role playing games like World of Warcraft and Dungeon Siege. I don't have time to play any now but I have spent countless hours "questing" online. No surprise that my favorite movie of all time is Lord of the Rings.

Lol, I promise not to bring any to the RT!

Nothing dorky about fantasy books! :) I LOVE all of the J.R. Tolken books!

Liann, that is SO COOL!!! I love reptiles - I find them fascinating! (All animals, really) When will the female snake's eggs hatch? I want to see pictures of the babies! :) And could you bring one of your snakes on the RT? I don't mind sharing a room with it! ;)

I don't have any unusual interests or hobbies. Outsiders would probably consider my love of fitness an "unusual" hobby, but y'all think that's normal. :) Which is why I love y'all so much. :D

My boring hobbies include gardening, photography, digital scrapbooking, all things Harry Potter... that's the bulk of it. Probably the most unusual of those is digital scrapbooking, but even that is becoming a lot more mainstream. Oh, and I did mention my My Little Pony collection in the other thread - I suppose that's unusual too. :)

I have some unusual, very un-girly, reading interests.

-military history (WWI through Vietnam era particularly.)

-ship wrecks (creepy & sad yet fascinating) I just finished two books, one of the Edmind Fitzgerald and the other on the Wilhelm Gustloff.

-forest fire fighters, particularly smokejumpers I couldn't put down Young Men and Fire the last time I read it.

Emily - Your hobbies aren't boring. My Little Pony is totally hip! ;) The eggs are due to hatch on the 22nd of July. I'm really nervous about it because we are leaving on vacation the 24th. If they haven't hatched by then, my poor mom is going to have to deal with the babies when they do hatch! Luckily, she isn't afraid of the babies, but I'd rather be there to separate them out and set them up. They are in an incubator right now. The snake in the first picture is a pastel Ball Python and that is what we are hoping hatches out of those eggs. We have a 50/50 shot at it since the daddy was a pastel.

Maybe I'll sneek one of my boas along to keep us company in the hotel room - lol!

Beavs, did I mention my BIL is a fire fighter for the US forest service? My DS has worked on fire crews in the past too, although she is too busy with her current resposibilities to be on a crew. Have you read Burning a Nation? At least I think that's the name. It may be out of print, but is about famous forest fires of the past.

ETA: The book is called Burning an Empire.

>Liann - how many babies would there typically be?

For this particular female, she had 5 eggs. The bigger the female, the more eggs possible (typically, there are always exceptions). For ball pythons, it's anywhere from 2-12 and I'm sure there's a "record" somewhere where one had more than 12, but that's the general range. We were very happy with our 5. Now boas on the other hand(which I am NOT breeding at the moment) can have clutches in the 20's and up. They give birth to live young and they have a LOT at a time.

Oh how exciting! I hope you get to be there for the hatching. :)

And definitely bring a boa! I'm sure the hotel won't mind. I'm positive I didn't read anything about a No Snake policy. No Cats and Dogs, yes. But they didnt' say anything about snakes... ;) }(

Whoah!!!

>And what do you do with the babies? Do you keep them all?
>Sell them to other snake enthusiasts? I find this
>fascinating!

If we have pastels, we may keep a boy & a girl back and sell the rest. Normals, we will just sell straight out. This year, we just bred for pastels, but next year, we have several combo "morphs" (morphs are the different genetic patterns/color variations) that we will be breeding. One of the snakes I posted in the original post is a spider and we will be breeding him to our pastel female and trying to get "Bumblebees". We will also be trying again for some pieds. We bred our het pieds (het means they have the trait in their genes, but do not necessarily show it)this year, but nobody took.

Here's a pic of a pied and a bumblebee

Pied:

Bumblebee:

So, each egg is just one baby? I guess when I think of snakes I think of the live birth type with lots of wriggling little snakelets. Those pics you posted of the pied and the bumblebee are beautiful.
