Just finished a good book...

I like Kristin Hannah too

Kristin Hannah's Firefly Lane It was a light read that made me laugh and cry. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters. It was a nice change after reading the whole Sookie Stackhouse southern vampire series!

What books are you reading right now?

Jenn

I recently read her latest one> Winter Garden. It's really good, starts a bit slow, but keep going -- story within a story that I found really riveting. (actually liked the embedded story better than the "real" one).

I just finished Blood Vines by Erica Spindler - really good! Murder/mystery in Sonoma Valley wine country.

Now I'm starting The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I really likethe way she writes so far. She's a new author, anyone read this yet?

Typically, I like Kristin Hannah and so was happy to pick up her latest, Winter Garden. 100 pages in and the narrative is so going absolutely NOWHERE and so I dumped it back at the library. A selfish as hell sister, a self-sacrificing sister on the verge of losing her husband and a mother who has shunned them both her whole life and made them the way they are. Ok, but you know what, when you become an adult, you no longer get to blame everything on your parents and crappy childhood: go off and be an adult already, get some therapy and for god's sake, learn how to love and let others in.

Phew, needless to say, this book did not work for me.

I was ready to give up at one point, too! I thougt , this is so gloomy & going nowhere! But, I decided to plow ahead & turned out out to be really interesting story. Give it one more try.

Yes, I read that for book club, it's really good. Very thought provoking and I liked her writing style as well. I need to look to see if she's published anything else since then.

I'm reading Protect and Defend by Vince Flynn. It was recommended to me by someone I met recently, so I was intrigued. It's a fun read, but not really my style. It's a thriller and very plot-driven; I prefer character-driven stories. But it does hold my interest and I like it well enough.

I also just started Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. I'm not very far into it yet, but so far it's really good. I loved The Time Traveler's Wife, which she also wrote.

I love these book threads!

I read this one a few months back and LOVED it! The characters stayed with me for a long time and I wondered who the women were gossiping about today!! I think that you will like that one!

I just finished the Joanna Brady (set in Arizona) and JP Beaumont (set in Seattle) series' from JA Jance. I am now catching up on all the newer releases on other series' I have read.

I am reading A Date You Can't Refuse by Harley Jane Kozak. I am really having trouble getting into it so I may move on to...Wicked Craving by GA McKevett.

My next series will be the "Undead" series by MaryJanice Davidson. I listened to Undead and Unwed. Pretty funny stuff for a vampire series. Nan - I don't know that you will like this series. The lead Vampire's name is Betsy :)!

I just finished The Help for my book group. Loved it. Everyone in my Book Group loved it also.

I forgot I also finished reading Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. I could have sworn I had already read it but nope! Now there is another series I am going to read!

Yeah, I tried fearful Symmetry also and that was another book I dropped back off at the library within 100 pages because it was not doing it for me. Sorry, but, there are so many books to read in this world. If an author cannot hook me within the first 100 pages of a 300 page novel, i.e., within one third of the book's total narrative extent, then I am done. Character, setting, tone, historical moment, description, conflict, obstacles, mystery, all of these things within those 100 pages let me know if this book is going somewhere I want to go. I don't just decide these things on a whim!

Moving onto "Lit" a memoir by Mary Karr......

Thanks to this super thread, I have begun re-reading "What would Jane Austen do?" yet again!! There is something sooo darned yummy about getting lost in a book. My son who is still learning to read says he loves certain books because it's like watching TV in your head!! Sooooo cute!!

Keeping the book in my car for the carpool lane at school.... Don't worry Lord Shermont!! I'm on my way!!! :D:D

I just finished reading (and crying) my way through Sarah's Key, after reading about it on another forum book thread. I read and enjoyed Olive Kitteridge while on vacation too.

If anyone likes "cozy mysteries," I highly recommend any of the Beatrice Potter series written by Susan Wittig Albert. Also, the Victorian Mystery series by Susan and her husband, writing as Robin Paige. Both series are light and fun, with a little history included.
