Jumping rope?

Hi Cathe & anyone else who can help out,

I was recently laid off from my job and have since gained 6 pounds by sitting at home and looking for jobs on the computer. (A major setback to me, as a year ago I went from a 207 pound 5'2" girl to a 165 much happier girl. I have been struggling to lose more since and my goal is to be in the 130s.) Anyway, right now, I cannot afford to pay for a gym membership or get expensive equipment, though I do have some weights and a stability ball.

So I would like to ask if jumping rope is a decent cardio workout? How many calories can I expect to burn if I did 30 minutes 3 to 4 times a week? I read somewhere (I believe it was iVillage) that jumping rope is easier on your joints verses running. Though, I would love to go on a jog outside, I live in South Texas and it's summertime. Some days, just standing outside feels like I am in a sauna with clothes on. :p So, I figure jumping rope might be something to look into as a temp fix until I can join another *air conditioned* gym again. :)

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

Jumping rope is a great cardio workout, but it's still high impact & can be tough on the joints.

Can't really tell you how many calories you'll burn--that's all up to the individual. But if you can manage to keep it up for 30-40 minutes you'll get an awesome workout.

Yay! I was hoping to hear it was a good cardio workout. :) Hopefully it won't be *too* rough on my 25 year old joints.

Thanks for your insight!

It's very intense cardio but you don't need to do it long to burn a lot of calories. I jump around 20 minutes and that's it!!

Here's a link to AeroJump workouts. They're really good but Aerojump 3 is extremely difficult. 1 and 2 are really good though!

They had a Jump Fit Extreme Class at my gym and let me tell you it was tough! Even the guys in the class were wiped out.

Go onto the Collage Video website and to a search with keyword "jump rope" or "jumping rope". I think they have some good videos that can help you develope a good jump rope method.

HOWEVER - if you have ANY dough to spare I'd suggest getting Cathe workouts rather than focusing on jumping rope. The brain factor alone will be good for you.

Yes, I definitely want to get some of Cathe's workouts!! She's so awesome. I first saw her on FitTV and she was the *only* TV aerobics person to ever leave me sore the next day.

I guess I just need something temporary since I am unemployed and without sufficient funds. I figured jumping rope would be a decently good cardio workout in the meantime.

I am very interested in getting the Body Blast collection should I come into extra money, though! :)

I definitely know running would be more interesting! But, San Antonio, TX in August is too hot and humid for me to run in. I also have a skin condition to where, if I get too hot, my body erupts with itchy and painful welts. So I would prefer something I could do indoors that's low-cost so that I can avoid over-heating myself.

Christina, you may not overheat while you jump rope but you will sweat up a storm! Put you on some good music and jump away. You will have a ball and work out hard.

Hi Renee,

I think you are right. I did a bit of jumping last night and I don't know how I'm going to work up to doing 30 minutes of it. It's really hard! I also busted a sweat after less than 5 minutes. I wonder if that is also because I am slightly out of shape?

Thanks for the music advice, too. I didn't think to do that, but I bet it helps keep one motivated!

Dani,

If you don't want tape 3 i would be very happy to buy it off you and pay the postage etc... (as i like in England). Hope to hear from you.

Hi Wayne, I just sent you an email through the Cathe site.

Hi,

As others have mentioned, you can get an intense cardio workout by jumping rope in a very short time - I go for about 20-30 minutes. It's so convenient because you don't have to go anywhere.

Remember that you need really good shoes and a forgiving surface (i.e., not concrete).

Also, there are different types of jumpropes to look into. I was told not to get the beaded ones because they are too heavy.

I bought a vinyl rope, but it didn't turn fast enough. So, I purchased one with ball-bearings and the rotation is smooth and fast.

You also need to buy one that is adjustable and adjust it to your height. You can do a "google" search on jumping rope to find out more.

Good luck!

Hi!!

I too read that one needs good shoes and a softer surface for jumping rope... I probably need new shoes; but, I have a decently soft surface to jump on. The rope I bought was adjustable and I fixed it until the handles came up to my armpits. And I don't know exactly what it is made out of... but I want to say rubber or material similar to, and it rotates nicely.

I am a bit out of shape, so I did the jump rope for like, 15 minutes 3 times last week. I was fairly proud of myself. It was very intense! And I enjoyed myself! :)

This week I have been walking outside because I am visiting my folks in another city and I will go on walks with them... not as intense, but that's ok.

I am hoping next week to go from 15 minutes to 20 minutes with the jump rope.

:D
