Joannie Greggins anyone?

I was going down memory lane while doing Boot Camp last week. I was wondering if any one else used to work out with Joannie. I used to do Morning Strech and I had a 33 album with a circuit work-out. She really was ahead of her time with this work-out. No weights were used, but it was like one or two minutes of cardio and a min. of strengh for like 30 min.

Oh the memories....

Susan

;-) Yes, I started out with Joannie Greggins. I had a couple of videos and albums. I got fed up with her after I bought a step workout, BORING! Is she still around?:D

I have an abs workout by JG that I still hang on to. It's not a bad workout if you can get past the bathing suit she wears at the end with the stomach cut out. Why is she wearing a bathing suit you ask?? Because she's slinking down into her hot tub after that tough workout.

I used to have a few of Joanie Greggain's workouts --- she was great at that time !! My DH and I used to do her Ab workout together. We, once commented on how we wonder what she's doing now??
Does anybody know?
What a super-bubbly personality and sense of humor !!

Linda;)

I, also, use to do Joannie Greggins. I can't even remember what I had of hers, though. Did she have album workouts like Jane Fonda did before the VCR?

It is kind of funny to think of doing your exercising with an album! Even albums are really outdated! I remember I had a double album of a Jane Fonda workout. Jane always seemed to wear large horizontal striped leotards. How funny.

Does anyone remember the year, approximately, that Joannie Greggins was around? She did seem better than Denise Austin - I mean a little more intermediate. Was it in the early '80's?

Are we giving our ages away by reminiscing of album and 33's workouts or what?

Cheryl

Yes, to think back on it, it sure does sound strange to do a full Cardio workout to an album!! It came with pictures of the workout, I believe.
I had all of Jane Fonda's too. One of hers was a KILLER workout -- like 90 minutes of very hi intensity aerobics. Do you recall that one?? I wonder if I could do it now -- ???
It could be in the early 80's - sounds about right.
Have you all been consistently working out since then? I have been pretty regular in keeping up with workouts. I went through all the Firms, and almost 200 of others.... but Cathe is by far my FAVORITE !!!
What about you all??

Linda;)

I started working out in 1975 and have been quite consistent since then. I belonged to a health club for many years. But then I caught on to the FIRM tapes and then Cathe in 1995. I quit going to a health club within a year - I got sick of the daycare. I only did the FIRM for about 2 years along with Cathe, then just Cathe for a while.

Now I have been doing the CIA's for about 5 years and Christi Taylors and now I am into the BOSU!

Fitness has come a long way - I will continue to fight the gravity issue with my butt!

Yes, I remember Jane Fondas 90 minute workout on the album. I think that was my double album. I remember having it in my car on a warm sunny day at it got warped! I had to reorder it - because I loved it so much!

I am 47 years old and hope to be exercising forever - I have ten children and am in better shape now than I was 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. Weight training has really helped in that aspect, to I have a flat stomach with a 24" waist.

I often wonder what I would look like if I never exercised, since I have had so many children.

I didn't mean to ramble - but these videos and DVD's and all of Cathe's workouts has enabled me to design my own workouts and experiment with what works and doesn't work for me and to do it at home when it is convenient for me. The health club never did for me what these workouts have done for me.

Joannie is like a SF Bay Area fitness icon. I think she still has a radio show on Saturday mornings on one of the Bay Area talk radio stations. She is a very sweet person. When I was a kid, I used to get up before school and workout with her 'Morning Stretch' tv show. I wasn't a fitness nut at the time, I was just copying my big sister.:p

Cheryl,
I am 30 week pregnant with our 5th child and have been glumly wondering if it will ever be possible to be in really good shape again, especially in the core region. But you have inspired me--perhaps with hard work it will be possible.
Thanks:)

Maggie

Maggie,

Yes, you can be in good shape after your baby - you just have to be disciplined in your exercising and your eating (one you stop breastfeeding). Set your goals and set up a workout plan week by week. That is how I have done it for years. I change my rotations every 3 weeks or so. That way I do not get bored with it.

People are always amazed when they meet me, especially if they were told before hand that I have ten children. They are always shocked!

Being in good shape after babies is not only good for you but your husband and your chidren, because you feel beter about yourself you seem to handle things better.

My motto always was, get the weight and inches off ASAP then I wouldn't have to waste my time obsessing about it.

Good luck with your baby. I always enjoyed being pregnant, except for the last few weeks!

Cheryl

OMG!! I used to use the Joannie Greggains album and I also had a Kathy Smith album that I used!!! I was about 15 at the time, so that was something like 1979 or 1980.

I was a huge Joannie fan. Met her in the late eighties when she came to a New York Record store and spent lots of time with her and took pictures. She was my idol. I taped her shows and had over 20 tapes full - I still have tapes of all aerobics. I have the episodes with Jack LaLanne. She was great. I e-mailed her and she answered me last year - she is a radio personality in CA - fitness and health. She had Andre Houle, Lisa Rinna (from soaps), Pepper Von, and her husband Kirk on the show. Way ahead of her time.

Oh my god. I worked out with my dorm-mates to Joannie in 1981 and 1982. Yes, we used an album.

To this day, when I hear the songs she used (Celebration, Whip It, etc.) I still hear her voice:

"Forward lunge, right foot back, snap your fingers, shake your shoulders!"

I am loving this thread!

Joannie had a book out on fitness a couple of years ago. I checked it out of the library. It wasn't bad.

Wow! Talk about flashbacks! Around 1983, I had two Jane Fonda records (remember those, people: round black vinyl with music on;-) ) a Joanie Griegans record, and a record by the woman who plays Sarah Connor's roommate in the "Terminator " movie (Bess Lamotta? )
I have no recollection what the Greggings workout was about, but recall the lying pelvic thrusts from the Fonda workout.

Yep. My college roommate during my freshman year (1985 to date myself) used to drag me out of bed in the wee hours to workout with ol' Joannie. I got really tired of hearing her say "That bologna sandwich has to go somewhere!"

Thanks, Cheryl, for the words of encouragement. I actually lost the weight with the first three (and I tend to gain quite a lot), but with #4, there were complications during and after pregnancy. As a result, I gained 80 lbs (yikes I know) mostly due to emotional stress. By the end of the pregnancy I was moving around like an old lady. It was awful and I never want to do that again! Because our little one required so much extra care during his first year, I did not exercise regularly and consequently only lost 50 of the 80 lbs. Anyway, now I have discovered Cathe and the whole home exercise thing and have worked out regularly since December. So even though I started out 30 lbs too heavy, I haven't gained as much as I normally do.

And boy do I agree with you that being in good shape is good for both me and my family. The last thing I need is to be out of shape and have no energy. I was just stressing that perhaps it wouldn't be possible.

Again thanks for the advice and encouragement.

Maggie

Hi Susan,
I remember doing Morning stretch. At the time It was so hard. My youngest child would try and do it with me. I did have a record of Kathy Smith back when she was on a talk show and another one which I cannot remember the name of. I cannot beleive how far I have came from then. I bought a book by Kenneth Cooper back then and was so happy when I could jump rope for 15 minutes. My first VHS tape was Jane Fonda's New Workout. At the time my DH had bought a weight set so I would do that and try and do squats and deadlifts. Now I am constantly looking for new challenges. I love Boot Camp. It is a great workout. It hits everything when I do not have time for my regular workout or when I just really need something different.

This has been so fun hearing about all the Joannie experiences :7 !

I used to think her workouts were so hard. We've come a long way baby!

What sticks out in my mind from the album I had was doing jumps and she warns you to "watch out for the cat" to the beat of the music. I remember the song Dangerous. She was so funny, it made the workout fun.

A good day to all!

Susan
