Jari Love

from doing chestflies with high reps and pulses, i had to have a steroid shot. i have read how high reps can be bad on the shoulders so go very light. i will probably not do jl anymore or skip the flies.just a warning!

So sorry this has happened to you Laura. I actually intend to start a JL rotation next week but I will not being doing it for very long. Were you using her work outs for long when you got injured?

Laura,

Wishing you a speedy recovery. In an effort to prevent injury and a slouched over look, I purposefully reduce the amount of chest exercises compared to back exercises and add extra rotator cuff exercises with shoulder work.

i have been doing her workouts for a long time but i switched to p90x+ for a month then back to jl. about the second week is when it happened. my job caused the pain to get worse than better because i do sales floor.i have never had a steroid shot before.how long does it take to notice an affect?

Laura,

I'm not sure how long it takes for the steriod shots to take effect. I would think it would be immediate. From my limited understanding, the steroid shots don't cure anything. They help with inflammation. Maybe, that's all you need is to help reduce the inflammation. When I hurt my rotator cuff, ice packs, massages and backing off of upper body workouts helped to reduce the inflammation. I'm sure if I had gone to a doctor in the early stages, he would have prescribed steriod shots.

i only have inflamation in my shoulder so hopefully thats all i'll need.i did rice but because of my job it got worse.funny, the doc had the exact same prob.so is your shoulder ok now?

I've had 2 rounds of cortisone and then the MRI of both shoulders, the high rep didn't do it, the heavy weights did...not acutely - but over time...it wasn't rotator cuff, in fact, 3 docs were puzzled (they work with the Olympic team) and said it looked like a gymnast's film - tons of cysts(bursal), bone marrow edema, unstable connection of ball and socket in both, bursitis....well, still, at 47 jumping to chatturanga(plank) in yoga, trying to bench heavy weights, despite form, wear and tear happens.

Jari's stuff is ok provided you quit pushups, pullups, overhead presses...yeah, I know, I can hear you....I balked and ranted until I saw the pictures myself and realized my livlihood was at stake if I became disabled from pushups and chest flies!!!

Saw the physical therapy and have some great Y and T alternatives that I copied and mailed to a gal on VF , and would do the same for any of you that want them, - and I've not lost any of my rippedness...and I just change the exercises I can't do anymore....and I no longer use anything heavier than 10 lbs...which hurts my ego more than I can admit, but has been allowing my overuse to heal....

wow! my prob is minor compared to what u had to go thru. i read on the internet that affects from the shot can take 48 to 72 hrs. also, your arm could feel worse after the injection for a day or more. i can tell most of the inflamation is gone but the shot did cause pain afterwards. i hope u feel better!

Yes, it's much better now. Once the inflammation went down, I still had shoulder pain. After a few more months of pain, I broke down and went to an orthopedic surgeon to rule out impingement or bone spurs. The OS diagnosed me with tendinitis, bursitis and partial frozen shoulder. He prescribed six weeks of physical therapy. The PT used ultrasound to break up the adhesion in my fibrous capsule and used a combination of heat, cardio, stretches and strength exercises for my rotator cuffs. Every once in awhile my shoulders hurt if I do too much chest work and not enough back/rotator cuff exercises.

Best wishes with the steroid shots!

Wendy
