Jamie Lee Curtis on NPR

Personally I do not think five pounds would make that much difference. A lot of times I will cut back on sodium and starchy carbs before a vacation and in a couple of days I will lose that much weight. I know it is all water. Most of the time I just eat what I want and do both cardio and weights 6 days a week. I am 50 and my goal is to feel energetic and enjoy my grandchildren.

Interesting thread, AGAIN!

For me, although I do enjoy being very lean, what I refuse to accept about aging is the presumption that it automatically means decreased physical capabilities. I met an 80-year-old woman in Phoenix about three years ago, and she is a 5K and 10K runner - and only took up running in her early 60's.

I see a lot of claptrap literature about exercise for the "mature population" and it's all about low-impact and be careful and don't push yourselves. To me, THAT'S the B.S. I fully intend to be doing I-Max (and I-Max 2 and I-Max 30!) when I'm twice the age I am now. I fully intend to lift heavy the rest of my life. And I know that as long as I'm able to work out intensely and safely, the aesthetic benefits will continue to follow.

Picture me standing: "clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap!"

You expressed that beautifully! This was what I was trying to convey! I just don't feel like anyone, man or woman, should have to "settle" for a certain body shape, fitness level, or mind set based on being a certain age.
I still applaud JLC if she's happy with herself like she is, but seeing women who are active and fit and have a beautiful figure due to being active and fit, I couldn't be happy with that picture of "this is what a 40 yr.old body looks like!" Not when I know that with a little effort, it doesn't have to!

Again, well said! I've been waiting for your response all weekend! :)

RE: My beloved Donna . . .

Hey, girlfriend! I don't have a computer at home, so I just logged on!

I put my post underneath yours for a reason, obviously - I so agreed with what YOU said too!

I have mixed feelings about the whole JLC Epiphany. Certainly she's entitled to her opinion, and it's a compelling one. However, JLC is a product of Hollywood, and Hollywood is a fairly diseased place spiritually. It emphasizes money, youth, sensation, drugs and looks over real values. Perhaps JLC's real rebellion is against those values, and unfortunately she may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater in eschewing physical fitness wholesale. Keep in mind I haven't read the article, just the responses to it.

"eschewing physical fitness wholesale"

Sorry, but this is absolutely not what she said, and nor did I.

"the presumption that it automatically means decreased physical capabilities"

neither did her message make any reference to the above. She did however say that working out solely for the aesthetic effects whose value is decided by another's ideology is no longer something she's prepared to pay lip service to.
