IS YOUR WEIGHT THE SAME ON WATER AS IT IS ON LAND?

Quick question for you smarter than smart types out there? If I brought a scale onto our boat and weighed myself, would my weight be the same as it would be weighing myself on the same scale on land?

We have a boat we stay on, and I am on a diet/exercise program, I need weigh myself once a week, but not sure if weighing on the docked boat will reflect a true weight? Does being on the water effect what you weigh?

Tneah - I'm pretty sure that your weight would be the same. I think if you weighed yourself IN the water it would be different, but on a boat shouldn't make a difference.

Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup. Shelley's right. Now, it might be hard to get a steady reading on a scale in a boat because of all the ups and downs of the waves, but it should average out to be the same as your weight on land. Weighing yourself underwater will give you a lighter weight because of the bouyant force of the water, which acts against gravity. The bouyant force of water is meaningless with regard to your weight if you're not actually IN the water. :)

Oh shush Lainie bug!:7 I just don't want to get all freaked out, if there is a chance your weight is all crazy on a boat or something!:7

So, here's what you do. If you get on the scale on the boat and your weight is up a bunch, then you blame the fact that you're on the boat. If it's down a bunch, then you say that of course being on the boat makes no difference at all!!! ;)

Yes, of course. Gravity IS gravity after all, and it doesn't care where you happen to be standing. Unless, of course, you were planning on sailing to the moon? ;)

I like Shelley's idea.:7 Thanks for the input, kinda a dumb question, but I have learned to put pride aside and ask away if I don't understand or know something, thanks guys!:)

Or you can lug the scale onto the shore while you're docked. You'll get the added benefit of a few more calories burned from all the walking back and forth. :p
