Is yogurt a clean food?

I read so much conflicting stuff about food and was just wondering if all the knowledgable nutrition people who post here would eat yogurt if you were eating clean.

Kim:)

Kim,

I'm not the most knowledgable person, but I eat plain lowfat yogurt (with pureed whole fruit) as part of my clean diet. It's minimally processed (and supposedly easy to make yourself, but I don't have the guts to do that, lol). HTH!

It depends on what kind you eat. For instance, yogurt with fruit in the bottom, has way too many calories, and too much sugar. I have read that you should buy plain yogurt and add your own fruit, but I HATE the way plain yogurt taste. Some people eat cottage cheese, again this is nasty for me, but I am a picky eater. So you just have to make sure it is low fat, and low sugar, and low calories. I don't eat yogurt anymore, but when I did, I bought it from my local Ralph's grocery store, it was sweetend with splenda and had 12 grams of protein.

My favorite now is Dannon Fit n Lite (or lite n fit...whatever) Vanilla. It's got 80 cal, 0 fat and is sweetened with splenda. I can't stand the way plain yogurt tastes either, but I keep it to cook/bake with.

To ask whether yogurt is a clean food implies that we first define what is clean. I am baffled by the response above (and I don't mean to be rude). CLEAN food does not mean LOW CALORIES. Clean means that a food comees direct from nature unrefined, unprocessed, and naturally produced. Avocados are clean foods. They are high in calories. They are good for you, and do wonders for your body. Eat them. Coconut milk - same. Peanuts, walnuts, seeds, flax seed, etc etc. These are about as clean as it gets.

Yogurt - because it is minimally processed - would in my book classify as a clean food, but not quite as clean as, say, an avocado. The less that's added by food companies to the yogurt, the better.

Be baffled all you want, but in terms of yogurt, I would never tell anyone not to eat it, but to look for a lower fat, lower calorie version. The higher the calories in store bought yogurt, the more sugar and simple carbs it contains. So I would defintely say that low cal, low fat , low sugar IS better than higher processed, higher sugar yogurt.

I would be more baffled (not to be rude :))by thinking peanuts are "clean". Peanuts contain some pretty nasty things (think mycotoxins).

Yogurt is a very healthy food. I like the suggestion of mixing plain yogurt with fruit! Sounds Good!!!

Sara

Here is a way to try plain yogurt, to make it tasty and delicious: mix with museli, let sit 10 min., then add a chopped tart apple and a sprinkle of dried cranberries. Mmmmm. It's my favorite breakfast.

I agree with Laurawd. Yogurt (except for plain) is less clean than a lot of foods, but also more clean than many. I disagree with the person who posted that peanuts are not clean. Peanuts are as clean as you can get.

For me, however, "clean" is just one of many factors I consider when choosing foods. I look at how clean the food is, how much fat it has, what kind of fat it has, how much sugar it has, whether it's whole grain and how much fiber it has. I weigh and balance all of these factors.

For yogurt, I don't expect any fiber, but I look very closely at the sugar and fat grams. I look for low or non-fat and won't buy anything that exceeds 12 grams of sugar per cup.

HTH,
Nancy

By definition, yogurt is not a clean food. But, yogurt provides health benefits not contained in other foods. I eat one yogurt a day to help fight yeast infections. I select low fat, low sugar.

FYI, dairy products can contribute to bloating. That is one of the reasons you don't see it as part of a fitness professional's diet.

Fage Greek yogurt is the best!!! Even the fat-free tastes so rich and yummy!!!! Sometimes I substitute it for sour cream on potatoes. One of my favorite snacks is Fage w/ a little honey and some almonsds....If eating it is wrong, I don't wanna be right!

Here is some info on peanuts from the book, The Fungus Link, by Doug Coffman.
"Cancer-Causing toxins, such as aflatoxin, produced by the Aspergillus molds, are a common contaminant of peanuts, soybeans, grains, and casava" (pg 111).

How can peanuts be clean when they are contaminated by mycotoxins that can cause cancer???? I would say almonds are much better than peanuts!!!

Sara

Sarab,

There is so much conflicting information on written paper that I just do not believe everything I read. I try to let my internal filter be the judge. I prefer almonds and cashews myself but also partake in a peanut every now and then.

The air we breath is so chock full of contaminants and poisons it's not even funny. I tend to believe that what doesn't kill me, makes me stronger!!! Otherwise, I would just be eating bread and drinking water. Not tap water because of the chemicals. Well then that leaves bottled water but then I have the plastic from the container leaching into the water. Sheesh. What's a girl to do? :)

Standing ovation to Candi!

RE: Yogurt.... I suppose to original poster I would ask if eating yogurt (low sugar-low fat) is better than another choice you'd make .. "Clean" obviously has many levels to eat... some might argue that I dont eat clean because I eat red meat, chicken fish... I guess it depends on the extent you want to take it.
Personally I look at "better" choices for myself rather than get hung up on a 4oz container of yogurt!

;-)

Candi,

I know, mold is everywhere...even in that bread ;).

As far as peanuts, have you ever looked at the shell? Try it sometime and you will see black on it....MOLD!! This is true for corn. The corn husks have little black spots all over them, which is also mold.

Sara

Sara, check the definition of "clean". You may have very good reasons for not eating peanuts, and your post is very informative. However, to be annoyingly pedantic about it just for the sake of accuracy, peanuts are "clean". :)
Nancy

Nancy,

I know the definition of clean. What I am really trying to say is how can something that is so unhealthy be in a "clean" category? I guess clean does not have to be healthy? Just not processed, natural, sugar-free, etc???

I would say that is confusing to me! Just give me some peanut free yogurt please!! :).

Sara

Wow, and I think I'm doing good:7 I had fruit and a handful of, you guessed it, peanuts for breakfast this morning. Not my typical breakfast but I thought it would keep me full for a while. It's funny how we find out that something "good" for us one day, isn't so good the next. If I want yogurt, I usually get the one w/most sugar of course, because I don't care for splenda. We could really go on and on about this couldn't we? Take us days!!!x( Hope you all have a wonderful day and a Merry Christmas!:7
