Is this fair?

My daughter was in the hospital with mono so she brings home her report card and she gets a D in Math because she wasn't given the opportunity to make up the test. She has already been struggling thru the subject, but obviously if she misses a test it is going to bring her grade way down, as such. She was in the hospital and could not take the test at the time so her teacher just slaps her with a D, never says anything else about it, doesn't call me, etc. Anyhow, I am going to be talking to her DT today and get to the bottom of this. This kind of thing just really sets me off. It just isn't right.

Charlotte:

It absolutely is NOT acceptable. Do not sign that report card.

Give the teacher one personal interview/meeting session and one opportunity to correct his/her mistake. When you meet, and you must insist on a personal interview, let him/her know you mean business and that you will not detract from your position any time soon. Take with you multiple photocopies and original copies of all doctors' forms, bills and letters testifying that your daughter has contracted this illness and on which dates, thereby preventing her from studying for or even taking her exam.

You must lay down the facts to this individual. Mono seriously tires the body and makes it impossible for an individual to dedicate the same time and energy to study that a healthy student can. Doctors and school administrators are well aware of this and accept this. All educational establishments are required to give equal opportunity for academic achievement to all students. This has not happened in your child's case and you therefore have a legitimate petition to make.

If your child's teacher refuses to correct his/her undrstanding of the situation and your child's on-going needs for additional time and access to make ups, then tell him/her you are going straight to the principal. And then do it.

If a personal interview with the princial fails to achieve the understanding your child needs and deserves, you simply take your complaint and petition to the school district. But, I should think that the buck will stop at the principal's office, if it even has to go that far.

Your number one job in your child's life (apart from giving her your heart and soul, of course!!!) is to act as advocate for her. Now is that time!

You can tell, can't you, that I am so mad on your behalf! I have a good mind to just march up to that school and pick that teacher up by the scruff of the neck and......££$@!£^$£$*^%$R&%$^£@£$%!!!!!!!

Clare,

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely going to do what you just said, and I will let you know what happens. I am really burning mad about it, but trying not to let it ruin my day. This kind of thing always gets me into PMS mode so much faster, but this time it is a good thing cuz it causes people to listen up alittle more. I have accomplished many things while pms'n.

Hi
Clare is right. Most likely the teacher will simply give her an incomplete and let her make up the test once she sees all of your paperwork re: her illness. I tend to get myself really worked up about stuff like this but my DH usually makes fun of me when it simply resolves after the first meeting on the matter. So try to relax before you meet w/ the teacher b/c she may simply give you the response you wanted right away. Good luck and I'm sure it will work out for you. :) /karen (if it doesn't work w/ the teacher you are 99% assured it will work out w/ the principal if you have paperwork b/c the principal will not want to have these ongoing issues w/ parents)

My daughter when she was in the 7'th grade and got sick, they ran tests and came back positive for mono, she was in and out of hospital's and was home for nearly the whole year, The teachers were great with her. They had a teacher come into the home and help her and some even gave her an exempt from the test. I don't think that teacher is being very fair, Even teachers for my son are working with him and his tests and homework instead of writting him off like that.

As a teacher myself, I am willing to bet that it is a misunderstanding. Did your daughter return to school with a doctor's excuse? I'm sure that she'll be able to make up the work after the teacher sees that she has one.

I would NEVER accept this either, Charlotte! That's not right! Your daughter deserves the opportunity to take that test just like everyone else! She was in the hospital!! It's not like she was playing hookey! I can't believe that teacher! That would infuriate me as well!!

Have a great work out!

Request a conference and get to the bottom of things here. I would bet there is more info to be gained by a good sit down conversation. If you remain unsatisfied, then take it up with the principal and so on. This kind of stuff is fixable, and I am sure a missunderstanding has occured somehow.

Please keep us posted, I am sure this will all work out.

Hi everyone! Called back the school since I didn't here yet from the teacher. She says she called..must have been when I stepped out (30 mins)? Anyhow, she says she will call back in the evening. Hope I am hear again as I am not going to sit by the phone. I just hopes she calls back before I take off again.

Wendy- hats off to you giving up the last cigarette! You go girl!

I'm a teacher (college), and while there are many reasons for not letting a student make up a test, having a valid illness and being hospitalized (for G* sakes!) is not one of them! I'd first take this up with the teacher: maybe there was a misunderstanding? did your daughter return to school with documentation of her hospitalization? If she/he doesn't budge, I'd go to the principal.

It sounds like a misunderstanding. I'm a former middleschool teacher and sometimes things like this happen. Especially if you have alot of classes to teach and grades to add up. Mistakes happen. I'm sure it will get straightened out.
