The second.

The pronunciation of "ough" is one of the toughest things to learn in English, I think:
tough (uff)
though (owe)
through (oo)
ought (aw)
bough (ow)

I always bring this one up when my French students say French pronunciation is so hard!

>Kathryn, I mix words all the time. Fast/quick = fick.
>Terrific / great = griffic.

It's a very time-efficient way of doing things, don't you think?;-)

>Also lots of people mispronounce cummerbund and say
>cumberbund...
Guilty as charged. (And I had to check to see if it was really spelled with two 'm's. I don't think I've actually seen it in print before.

This is a hilarious thread.

My toughies are conscientious (have to think when I spell it, too!) and rural (that one always wants to become one syllable).

I meant to post this the other night when The Biggest Loser was on. Kim said acrosst instead of across. I've heard other people add a "t" to the end of this word before.

I can't say Portugese.

My dad says "Sektember" and "John Travolka". It drives me crazy. He's 77 years old and I don't think he's going to change.:p

My dad says Iggles instead of Eagles. He also says Nine-ee-nine instead of ninety-nine. But I think that Southern Lancaster County in PA. When I lived in Maryland, the hard core locals said they lived in Balmer, Merlin. Used to crack me up.

I absolutely can't stand when people say "supposebly" instead of "supposedly". I have yet to hear someone say it correctly! :)
