Is sweat the best medicine for a cold?

LauraMax

I had a pretty bad cold that pretty much KO'd me on Sunday & Monday. Yesterday morning I decided to ease back into my routine w/some light cardio (TJ's Kick Punch & Jam). All day I felt exhausted & miserable. I had legs on the agenda at the gym last night & literally forced myself to go.

Well, after, I felt almost back to 100%! It surprised me--I walked into that place feeling like crap & left feeling energized & healthy.

I don't think this would work for serious stuff like the flu, bronchitis or strep, but I really believe that sweating helps to rid your body of all the poisons & toxins we're constantly breathing in every day--especially in my office, it's so disgusting! We don't even have a cleaning service, we have one guy who walks around a couple hours every morning emptying garbage cans & wiping down the bathrooms. No vaccuuming, no surface scrubbing, no real cleaning to speak of & it's been like that at least for the 5 years I've been here & surely even longer. My bookshelves & file cabinets are all covered in dirt & dust. There are mouse droppings in corners of my office. Add to that the variety of roof leaks we've had in this 120 YO building (that, incidentally, is chock-full of asbestos) & god knows what kind of mold/mildew is growing in our rafters--it's no wonder our staff take so many sick days.

On the upside, we have windows that open. :) I still think fresh air is better than those filtered, climate controlled environments in which most of us work. But still, it would be nice to spend 9-10 hours a day in a place that was relatively clean instead of embarassingly filthy.

OK, a long way of saying I think sweat is the best medicine not only for colds, but for lots of other stuff too.

Hey Lauramax,

I agree with you-I hardly ever get sick anymore but I do always workout when I am sick and I always feel better after.

I'm the same. Unless it's a bronchial type thing or I'm feverish. I had a chest infection in December and working out just made it that much harder to breathe, so I took some rest days. If it's just a regular cold, I find that sweating it out makes it go away more quickly.

I thought that a dirty environment is good for us. Builds the immune system. <smirk>

I try to exercise when I have a cold, but at those moment when I'm just dead tired, rest does just as much good.

Yes, I do too! My uncle who is a neurosurgeon and an Ironman says it is one of the best things for colds...to sweat it out. But, not for more serious illnesses. I am sticking with that!

I dunno, I am coming down with a cold but didn't want to skip my workout this AM. I basically have a sinus thing, no fever or anything like that. I chose to do a light Firm DVD and I was cold clammy sweats and jello legs through the whole thing. Maybe it's only after you've been sick a few days and are on the rebound. If I feel this way tomorrow, no work out!

Sally, you know what I thought made a big difference for me? I usually do a low carb diet and there are absolutely NO "comfort" foods that are low carb. Chicken noodle soup, ice cream, fruit juice, toast--all are LOADED w/carbs.

Add all those carbs to the 2 days I spent sleeping on the couch & I think it helped quite a bit (note to self & others: 2 days on the couch + high carbs + no cardio = 5 lb weight gain). I think you might be right--I couldn't even think about exercise on Sun & Mon much less actually do it. But I felt myself trying to rebound yesterday & figured I'd give my body a jump start. It worked for me.........

Anyway, hope you feel better soon! :)

Thanks Laura, we've been passing around one darn cold after another this winter. ENOUGH ALREADY! I can't wait for spring...

Sally

PS: I hope you enjoyed your carbs!

I am just getting over a NASTY sinus infection that absolutely knocked me off my feet for the last two weeks. I have spent so much time on the couch that I'm pretty sure my body is now imprinted there.

Anyway, I couldn't work out at all (never mind working out, doing laundry was exhausting!). So I think it probably really depends on a lot of factors. I also recall reading somewhere (I think here) that you shouldn't work out if you have chest congestion - can someone verify that? Maybe one of our nurses??

Just thought I'd add my two cents...

I'm an instructor, and we tell everyone not to work out if it's below the neck. Marie, you are correct...you shouldn't work out with chest congestion.

If it's just a cold, we say listen to your body. Many times breaking a sweat will speed your recovery. I say try it, see if you can get through it and pay attention to how you feel afterward. Your body will then tell you whether or not to do it again.

BTW, I had a nasty cough which persisted for three months. I started drinking Snapple White Tea, and the cough disappeared. Maybe it's just me, but give it a shot next time you feel one coming on.

Feed a cold, starve a fever. If you need to sweat something out, you got more than a cold.

I have a pretty nasty sinus infection right now and like you, I've been absolutely drained of energy. I literally slept all day yesterday and most of today.

This is consistent with what I've always heard. It makes sense when you think about it. When your chest is congested you can't get adequate air to support exercise, especially high intensity exercise.

I don't know how common it is, but I've heard that exercising with a fever can cause myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

I think if your symptoms are above the neck it's perfectly OK to workout as long as you feel up to it, but I would start at a lower intensity and increase from there.

Feel better, Michele!!! ((hugs)) I actually finished my entire course of antibiotics, which I never do (I know, that's bad). However, I still feel like ****, so I'm going back to the doctor later this week to see if this is really something else and/or if I have to try some other antibiotic. Honestly, it has been the worst feeling - like being pregnant and having mono all at once, lol

(Sheesh, I shouldn't even say things like that!)

Anyway, I hope you feel better soon! :)

{{{{{MARIE}}}}} -- Yeah, if you've finished your course of antibiotics and you're still under the weather, I'd definitely call the doctor.

>>Honestly, it has been the worst feeling - like being pregnant and having mono all at once, lol

ROTFLMAO!!

OMG there's nothing worse than a sinus infection. My freaking teeth hurt! I've been on antibiotics for 2 days now and I feel slightly better, but I don't know when I've felt so fatigued.
