Is it dangerous to....

work out if you are suffering from a cold ? Just wondering because I am a bit under the weather at the moment, but not feeling as bad as I was at the weekend.

Thanks

Anna :)

Hi Anna

Its not recommended, I would say if you are feeling not well or have been ill for a couple of days give yourself an extra 2 days off just to let you body recover.

You have to remember that you body has been fighting off this cold so it needs time to get back on an even keel. Sometimes I try to work out but find that after the workout I'm wiped out. So give you body a little time to recover. Eat well I would recommend some good hearty soups to help you on your way and lots of vitamin C.

RE: Hi Babs

Yes I did over spent on my overdraft but it was just good to get out of the office for a while. Didn't do much just stayed at home and chilled out.

Thank you for the recipe I will be trying it out on Friday.

I work out with a cold as well. I actually believe it helps me fight it quicker as the longest I've had any cold-like symptoms is 48 hrs in the past year or so. I think I must sweat it out working out, or maybe it's the rush of certain antibodies or something, but I fight off colds faster than ever before in my life by working out while sick.

But if you're weak on top of it listen to your body. I'm such a dinosaur I could probably still work out with pneumonia! :)

I've heard and read that if it is all in your head, (literally)it is okay to workout. If it is below, in your chest, you need to take time off. Hope you feel better SOON!

Hello Anna,

I do work out when I have a cold but then I am a bit obsessive about exercise.

If I was really under the weather then I would stop. Some of Cathe's workouts are quite tough I would say avoid those and do PowerMax, Cardio Kicks or something that is not involve heavy lifting.

I have contacted the Step company regarding mini step btw. I will let you when they reply. I am anxious to get one too.

Hi Anna,

I usually work out when I have a cold also. If it's a weight training day I substitute cardio, floor aerobics to be more specific as I tend to move slower and have a hard time keeping up with step aerobics. When I'm not in the mood to do any moving around, I hop on my stairstepper and do a low intensity, long duration workout.

If I'm weak or feel fairly exhausted, I take a rest day, eat light but well and get plenty of fluids, especially orange juice (I keep cans of the frozan concentrate in my freezer for just such emergencies). :)

Anna:

Please feel totally OK to NOT work out for a few days. Let your body recover its strength or you will be giving to the workout the energy and resources you need to recuperate. Cathe is the toughest there is, give yourself a break! With litttle kids in the house who rely on their Mum always being there and not taking to her bed, I would listen to your body and let it rest when it needs to.

It's not a question of not "letting a cold stop you from working out", that's too gung-ho for a sick body, in my opinion. With a cold, your body is trying to tell you something: what do you think the message is?

Hi All,

Thanks for all your comments today, I have decided that (as my joints are still achey) I am going to skip working out tonight and put the Christmas decorations up instead. I don't want to feel any worse than I do already.
