Ipod Preferences

Hi All!

I'm taking my ipod in to the Apple Store today for them to look at. I would like to get your opinions on the ipod you like most and why. I have the 80 gig classic - as I understand it has moving parts (hard drive) inside that can get distorted, but what about the new video nano's. Anyone have the i-touch? Worth it?

Thoughts and suggestions please. I use it at work in a speaker dock during the day and at home listen to music via headphones. I don't run (yet - not sure I ever will) and when I do CC on the elliptical, my computer is in that room so I play it from that.

TIA

Jane, I love my 80 gig classic. I have had no trouble with it as far as running or mowing or biking or anything really. I like it because I get bored with my music easily and I can fit almost everything on it. I had a Nano before it and my only complaint was that I couldn't fit all my music on it. Other than that...no difference.

Good luck at the Apple Store! :)

There's really a minimal risk of damaging the hard drive in a Classic iPod... you'd have to practically be using it while running a jackhammer to experience any skipping in your music - they have a pretty long built-in buffer (I want to say 60 seconds?). Of course, with any kind of jarring motion, there's a risk of damaging the hard drive, but I think they're well-made enough that the risk is pretty low.

I have a Nano and an iPod Touch and love them both, for different things. I use my Nano for workouts (CC and whatnot), and my Touch has all my music on it. Is the Touch worth it? Depends what you want out of it. For just a music player, probably not. But now that Apple has opened up the Touch to software developers, you can get some pretty nifty apps and games for it, and the web browsing and email are really excellent. For those of us who are unable to get iPhones (because I live in an area with spotty AT&T coverage), it's the next best thing. :) The Nano and the Touch both use flash memory technology, so there are no moving parts to worry about.

I've been using my nano for music and my blackberry curve for everything else (i.e. email, web browsing, camera). My DH says I don't even need my nano at all because I can probably load my music on the blackberry, but I see no reason to do that. The nano is so tiny and so light and has such good sound quality, I don't want to stop using it. Also, it fits in my hand perfectly when I'm at the gym. I hear the iphone is getting up to speed with email, which was the only area in which it was truly lacking. I do prefer the real keyboard to the on-screen keyboard. In any event, I'll never have an iphone because my firm pays for my blackberry, but the iphones sure do look ultra-cool. ;) Good luck with your decision.

It's all personal preferance

I don't think you can go wrong with any ipod. It all depends on what you want to use it for. I use my 80GB classic for my everyday music. It mostly stays in my Bose speaker dock at home. I use my Nano for workouts. (Before I bought my Nano I used a ipod shuffle for workouts) I found the 80GB too bulky for workouts. Then I have my iphone for on the go music.

I recently bought my son an ipod touch for his 16th birthday. I haven't given it to him yet (his birthday is in 2 days). If I didn't already have an iphone I would probably buy a touch for myself.

Whatever you decide to do it might be better to wait a few weeks. I remember seeing a post recently that Apple releases it's new products in September and there's usually a price decrease at the same time.

I just picked up a used (but very nice condition) 8 gb nano from eBay for $100 + shipping. I haven't received it yet, but I can't wait to get it. It also came with an armband. I'm going to use it for Cathe workouts and watching video away from home. Might even end up using it for CC and/or music, but the main thing I want is video.

Update....Apple store looked at my classic 80 gig, tried to reload it and tried some things. not software related, it was related to the hard drive / battery. They said to fix, they usually swap the entire "guts" out. They didn't have one in house to do the swap from and it would have cost $180 plus tax!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think I'll figure out a new ipod to get for that price!

Keep the opinions coming along!

thanks everyone for your opinions so far!
