IPAD User

Hi All,
I'm thinking of getting an IPad for my daughter for xmas. I'm also thinking that I may "share" it with her. For those of you that have one is it worth it? What makes it so "special"? I am not a MAC user and I have a work laptop...how is it different from a laptop?

My daughter had asked originally for a Kindle; but now says she would rather the IPAD.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Elena

My parents just bought me an Ipad for an early Christmas present. I have been debating on whether or not to get one because I had to upgrade both my desktop and laptop this year. I was thinking that I really couldn't justify getting one since I got the new laptop.

Now that I have one, I have to say...it's pretty darn cool. It's very portable. You can surf the net, get your email, and there are new apps coming out every day that allow you to use it for other things too. It will be good for me when I am traveling, and I don't want to lug the laptop around. I do a lot of photography, so I will have to use my laptop for editing images...the ipad does not take the place of a laptop. I also use it as a portfolio for my images, as it has a wonderful screen. It does not support flash right now, but I have a feeling that will change as more and more app developers are coming out with new flash capable browsers for the ipad. There are apps that allow you to text from your Ipad as well, since that is not normally a part of the Ipad set up. The map/gps feature on both the Iphone and the Ipad are great. I've used it several times when my conventional gps got lost.

I guess it just depends on what you want to do with it: listen to music or podcasts, check you email, surf the net, chat, watch movies...you can do all that. There are new productivity apps for note taking (even using a stylus to write with). I think the capabilities will be expanded over time. Apple just makes a good product.

There are rumors that the second generation Ipad is coming, but no one knows for sure when that will happen. I thought they might do it for Christmas, but I think we would know something by now if that was the plan. I really think it will be next spring. Again, no one knows what the upgrades will be: some say a slimmer design with a front facing camera for video chat. A software upgrade should be coming any day now.

I agree. I also use mine for work. There is a cool app called penultimate let's you actually write notes down on your iPad and save to a notebook on your iPad. I never need to take a notebook to a meeting. You can also have numerous notebooks on your iPad.....one for every project. I recommend the Pogo stylus from Amazon to use as a writing tool. You can also download word doc and excel spreadsheets and ppt presentations and work on them on your iPad and then mail them out if you need to. Also have books, mags and newspapers and movies downloaded for entertainment. Oh and did I mention anything about on line shopping when you are out or sitting at the airport?

My husband loves mac products and we have pretty much everything they make. The ipad is useful for trips because you can browse Internet and check email, but it has limitations compared to a laptop.

You can't load "programs" on it, as you are familiar with them. There has to be an app available which isn't the case for all programs.

My husband is loathe to admit there is any limitation to an Apple product, but he says it's practically impossible to use spreadsheets on it because of the time it takes to pull the "keyboard" function up over and over as you move between cells.

He says the new ipad will likely be out in January, so you might want to wait for that too.

Reading on the ipad is great, as long as you are inside. I tried on the beach last week and it basically becomes a mirror. You can still manage but it's unpleasant.

A laptop is far more flexible than the iPad, but the iPad is cooler and more fun. Finding and trying apps is pretty interesting in and of itself.

You can go to Best Buy or the Apple store and try one out before you buy it to make sure it's what you have in mind.
