Not sure what to do about this. I'm kind of tight w/money so I usually recycled my bottles by refilling them w/tapwater & sticking them in the fridge. Then I heard toxins from the plastic eventually start to break down & get into the water so I started buying cases again.

What are the options if you shouldn't buy it & you shouldn't store it in plastic bottles? What can I take to the gym?

i do the same thing with empty bottles, but after a week or so i have to throw them away b/c its a pain to clean them. i think of it more of my germy backwash in the bottle then the toxins in from the bottle. why can't we go back to the days when you could drink from the hose without causing cancer? :-( it seems nothing is good for you anymore.

i also have some standard water bottles that are meant to be reused too maybe that is an option. we are looking into a brita water pitcher as well(our apartment won't let us use that sink gadget like we have used before), so we always have something on hand. our water is starting to taste, um bleachy i should say LOL

I use a SIGG bottle. It's aluminum(I think) and you just fill it and refill it--wash as needed. They been featured pretty heavily in magazines, etc., recently since they are considered the environmentally-friendly option to bottled water.

I have a to-go coffee cup that I use for water on the go.

We have spring water delivered to our house. We've done it for about 12 years now. It's cheaper than buying it by the bottle ( I think) and we don't have all those bottles to recycle.

I agree with the other posters. We are going to need to buy reusable to transport our water (which is what we had to do in the days before bottled water). I feel like bottled water is a necessary evil since I like being able to get water when I am on the go. Maybe someone will create something else to store bottled water that is more environmentally friendly.

>pippa i just looked these up and how cool are these things.
>LOL accessory to any fitness outfit LOL.

>Kassia..I know...I love that you get to design your own. You won't believe how long it took me to decide. I had to keep reminding myself that I really don't need 5 of them...LOL:)

I carry a Nalgene bottle with me pretty much everywhere. I have a couple of them - and if it's going to be a long hot day, I freeze the stuff in one, to melt by the time I need it. Works for hikes, too.

This is off topic but about water. I just read that Pepsico is going to have to change the labels on Aquifina to say that it is actually tap water!

Wow! I buy Smart water buy the case! when the bottle is done I fill it up with fitered water from my fridge. (I workout with the smart water, and drink the filtered water during the day). Sometimes when I'm finished, I will fill it again, and stick it in the fridge for another day!!I'm thinking: investing in a SIGG bottle (love the variety) may be the better thing.

I actually just this summer stopped buying juice boxes for my kids (11 and 7 years old) and have been buying them the bottled water!! And they are drinking it with no complaints!!

So....is it not safe to drink out of any plastic container??? I have plastic cups I use for my kids (giving them glass could be a disaster!).

I don't buy water bottles too often. Only when we are going to events such as my ds's games.

I too buy Smart Water by the case-the quart sizes-and this was before Jennifer Aniston became the spokesperson!

For some reason, its the only water I can drink 4 whole quarts per day, it goes down so easy and prevents muscle cramps which I tend to get in my hamstrings. It is expensive though.:-(

I'm 100% behind the "back to the tap" movement.

I suggest buying a sports bottle (or two, or three) at the store and using that instead of the plastic bottles. Wash it and put some hot water and lemon in it for a while before using it for the first time.

Plastic bottles are actually quite stable - it's an urban myth that toxins leach into your water. But, IMO, they are an environmental nightmare because only about 1% of of the bazillion disposable water bottles used in the US are recycled. The rest go to landfills, and there they stay...

I was using one of those unbreakable plastic water bottles. I starting reading about them and found out some not so good stuff so I went out and bought a stainless steel water bottle. They are more expensive then your typical store bought plastic water bottle but since I use it so often it was worth it to me.

It is possible that chemicals from plastic containers can get into food, which is why one should only microwave food in glass containers. Heat can accelerate the process. Also, if you keep your case of bottle water in your car on hot summer days, the likely of contamination is higher. The best thing that one can do for your own health and safety as well as helping the environment is buy a water filter for your faucet at home. Also invest in a heavy duty glass water bottle. It will be a little heavier to carry around, but a much healthier option. Filtered tap water is what Dasani and Aquafina bottle anyway. Using your own filtered water is cheaper.

Nalgene!

A one liter nalgene bottle is cheap. You can pour boiling water into it and kill any germs. You can freeze them. They are used in labs because they are not porous and virtually unbreakable. Rinse them out and you're good to go.

As far as germs in your own water bottle. The backwash came from you, those germs are already in your bod!

We put a Black and Decker water filter on the line that feeds our refrigerators water line, our ice and drinking water are just as good as any bottled water. Have to change the filter every six months.

Unfortunately, some of the most toxic chemicals are in plastics. Water bottles are the #1 source of chemical leakage. I finally found a new bottle called the "klean kanteen". http://www.kleankanteen.com/

Also--be sure to NEVER EVER EVER microwave ANYTHING in plastic--all the toxins seep right into your food. Always microwave in glass if possible.

Read below: It is NOT recommended to run them thru the dishwasher:

Sigg Cleaning Tips:
Sigg products are easily kept clean with some simple steps. Cleaning steps
Rinse with clean warm/hot tap water Let dry
This process can be repeated with a small amount of liquid dish soap to remove sticky spots from juice or carbonated sodas.
For exceptional cleaning, use a Sigg Cleaning brush set. They are shaped to reach inside and clean all areas of the bottle with ease.
Using a DISHWASHER is not recommended because the narrow mouth of the bottle may not be permit a thorough cleaning. High heat and pressure from a dishwasher may dull the outside paint over time.
Do Not Freeze
Because water expands when frozen, the bottles could split. Refrigeration is recommended. We offer Ice Tube Trays that work great for a refreshing ice cold drink.
