Interesting article on bottled water

It is absolutely, positively NOT an urban myth that plastic bottles leach toxins into your water. PM me if you want more info. I promise you, though--it is a complete fact.

That's what I'd heard--plastic products are petroleum based so eventually the petroleum breaks down & ends up in the drink. Talk about mixing oil & water!

I like the Klean Kanteen idea but it seems a bit unweildy for the gym. I think I'm gonna try the SIGG. Bummer about the no dishwasher though--for the first time in 7 years I have one & I am so loving it! :p

Laura,
The Klean Kanteen is perfect for the gym--it's not heavy or bulky at all--it's about the same size as a regular water bottle. It keeps your water incredibly cold too.

OH BOY!

Thanks a lot Laura & Pippa! Because of you the ole CC just went cha-ching AGAIN! I just had to order a SIGG! I decided to get one for the RT and they assured me it would go out today and be here in 2-3 days! Now, if I could just find some CUTE clothes that fit RIGHT! Pippa, which Sigg do you have? I guess they just came out with a new fliptop that opens with one hand. Just curious! Some of them are such neat designs!

I hadn't heard that--I think if it were true soda companies around the world would be in a financial panic! That said, I notice that soft drinks from aluminum cans taste differently than drinks from plastic bottles. Not worse, just different.

Mama Deb, just consider it payback for your excellent salesmanship on the pre-order.......}(

Go to the thread in Open Discussion on Nalgene water bottles. Reports are that this material is toxic as well.

Aluminum is not inert, and it's not a good idea to cook with it or to put acidic foods in it. It may be stable enough for unheated, non-acidic liquids, but I don't use it. If water tastes different from being in an aluminim container, it's obvious that something from the container is getting into the water. Same with sodas.

The Sigg bottles that are aluminum have a 'leach-proof lining,' so water doesn't come in contact with aluminum. They don't say what the lining is made of, though (at least, I haven't found the info on their site).

FYI: The company that manufactures these bottles also makes restraint devices for rabbits and other animals used in product testing (like restraining rabbits for the Draize eye test (dropping chemicals in their eyes to see what effect it has) or skin sensitivity tests.

I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm sticking with my Rubbermaid water bottles. They're made of polypropylene (look for "PP" under the recycling symbol) which is safe and not known to leach harmful elements. My #1 favorite feature is that they can go in the freezer and the dishwasher. They also have a wide mouth so you can add ice cubes.

The aluminum bottles are lined with an epoxy making them safe for beverages, but they can't go in the freezer or the dishwasher.
